In May, a variety of productions graced the screens of Tubi. Whether you’re a devoted user or an occasional visitor, you were treated to classic thrillers, horrors, comedies, and more. One of the standout features of Tubi is that it regularly updates its content catalog monthly. As June draws near, we can expect a host of beloved movies and shows to join the streaming platform, including one of Jake Gyllenhaal’s finest performances.
Fans of Jake Gyllenhaal will soon have the opportunity to re-experience the 2014 blockbuster “Nightcrawler” next month. This movie, which boasted a remarkable 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, features Gyllenhaal as Louis “Lou” Bloom, an ex-thief turned deranged stringer who hunts for violent and macabre events in the wee hours of Los Angeles to sell the footage as exclusives to a local news station. The plot is both intriguing and singular, making it crucial for the cast to be equally compelling to make “Nightcrawler” a movie worth remembering – and they certainly achieved that goal. Alongside Gyllenhaal, the cast included Rene Russo as Nina Romina (KWLA 6 morning news director), Riz Ahmed as Rick (a homeless young man who becomes Lou’s assistant), Bill Paxton as Joe Loder, Kevin Rahm as Frank Kruse, and others. You can find the official synopsis below.
Residing in Los Angeles, Louis Bloom (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), manages to eke out a living through scavenging and petty theft. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he discovers a new vocation as a cameraman. Equipped with a camcorder and police scanner, he embarks on nightly excursions across the city, seeking out disturbing and gruesome crimes. When a worn-out news director (Rene Russo) notices him and sees an opportunity to boost her station’s ratings, Louis becomes more determined to capture the “money shot,” pushing himself to ever greater extremes.
‘Nightcrawler’s Script is Ingrained in Jake Gyllenhaal’s Memory
The movie “Nightcrawler” was Dan Gilroy’s first directorial effort, released on September 15, 2014 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Following its festival premiere, it hit cinemas on Halloween, October 31, 2014, after a marketing campaign that heavily used social media. For promotion, false profiles were created for the character Lou, with a fabricated video resume even posted on Craigslist. On a modest budget of $8.5 million, this crime-thriller grossed an impressive $50.3 million at the box office. In an interview with NPR in 2014, Jake Gyllenhaal discussed his identification with the character, stating that he agreed with what Lou expresses in the film, but not necessarily his methods.
His dialogue suggests a genuine entrepreneur; it echoes that of a highly successful businessperson. Frankly, there isn’t a single point he makes in the film that I disagree with. In fact, I find myself nodding in agreement with his character on various counts. However, it’s his actions that I may not always support.
According to an interview with Gyllenhaal, NPR noted that his character adhered to the philosophy of “if it’s sensational, it sells.” In journalism, news stories with graphic content tend to attract more viewers. These are often labeled as “exclusives” or “first looks,” and freelancers can earn substantial sums for such content. During the interview, Gyllenhaal admired how Lou used uplifting self-help language, even going so far as to recite the film’s opening speech for NPR, which emphasized optimism and self-improvement.
Pardon me, sir. I happen to be on the hunt for employment opportunities. To clarify, I’ve decided to pursue a career path where I can continuously learn and advance. I should mention that I’m diligent, aim high, and have been commended for my determination.
