During its remarkable 50th season, Saturday Night Live stood out with numerous highlights, one of which was James Austin Johnson‘s portrayal of President Donald Trump. He added immense humor and satire to several cold opens on NBC’s sketch comedy show throughout last year. Johnson first joined SNL in season 47, where he played multiple characters. However, it’s his impression of the current U.S. President that has garnered significant attention so far.
I had a thrilling conversation with Deadline where I shared my amazement at taking part in SNL’s 50th anniversary cold opens. It was surreal, really, since it brought together legends of comedy that I’ve admired and looked up to throughout my life. The sketch featured Mike Myers as Elon Musk, Dana Carvey as President Joe Biden, Jim Gaffigan as Tim Walz, and Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris. Needless to say, being on the same stage with my idols fueled my ambition to elevate my comedic performance during SNL’s 50th season. Here’s what I had to say about it:
The double dose of pressure – being part of the 50th show and having my comedy idols on stage with us in some sketches – was akin to Bowen and me exchanging glances, saying silently, ‘look at us, performing alongside these legends’. It fueled my ambition to step up my game and reach their level. Essentially, the entire season for me was about finding the way to match the caliber of these role models I’ve admired, and there they were, right on stage with me.
What Johnson’s Comments Mean About His Commitment To SNL
Johnson Aspires To Be As Good As The Comedic Legends Who Are A Part Of SNL

Johnson’s remarks about collaborating with his comedy heroes during SNL season 50’s cold opens demonstrate the high regard he holds for these veteran performers who have graced the show over the years. Notable names like Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Andy Samberg, and Maya Rudolph are aware that SNL is all about satirizing current societal and political issues. Having worked on this iconic live show for a while, Johnson has gained a deeper appreciation for the exceptional talent nurtured by Lorne Michaels’ long-running series.
Johnson’s imitation of Trump’s behavior, tone, and appearance is hilariously accurate, making him one of the standout cast members on Saturday Night Live (SNL) in recent years. He has also been mentoring new SNL season 50 cast members Ashley Padilla, Jane Wickline, and Emil Wakim, even taking them out for lunch and explaining the show’s workings to help alleviate some of their pressure. Johnson sees the new trio as natural talents, and reflects on his own start on SNL when he was unsure if he could handle the show due to personal challenges in his life, as his wife was pregnant at the time.
Our Take On Johnson’s Role In SNL And His Future With The Show
Johnson Is One Of SNL’s Best Cast Members Who Has More To Offer
The way Johnson has portrayed Trump on SNL and the significant influence he’s had on the show and its cast strongly suggests that he should be invited back for SNL season 51. It remains unclear who will remain or leave the program, but Johnson’s impeccable comedic delivery and captivating persona have solidified his position as one of SNL’s standout performers, evoking memories of comedy greats like Dana Carvey and Darrell Hammond due to his diverse impersonations. In addition to playing the president in opening skits, Johnson may also be assigned new roles for the show’s upcoming seasons.
