As a seasoned film critic with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Daniel Craig‘s tenure as James Bond has been nothing short of iconic. From the gritty realism of Casino Royale to the heart-wrenching farewell in No Time to Die, Craig has breathed new life into a character that was once teetering on the brink of cliché.
“The name’s Bond, James Bond… I think.” It’s no secret that Daniel Craig is tired of talking about his tenure as Britain’s most famous fictional spy, but his exhaustion over the franchise has left the actor to forget how many movies he’s actually made. Craig first got his license to kill in Casino Royale, in 2006. Co-starring Judi Dench, Mads Mikkelsen, and Eva Green, Marc Forster’s James Bond reboot brought the commonly misogynistic spy into the 21st century. After much deliberation about retirement, Daniel Craig gave his final performance as Bond in the ironically named No Time to Die in 2021. Just don’t ask him how many films he’s made in the years between.
No Thanks, Keep Reading
Discussing their new movie “Queer” with Variety, Drew Starkey and his co-star played a game of guessing each other’s trivia. When Starkey was asked about the number of James Bond films Daniel Craig has starred in, both actors looked puzzled. Initially unsure about the rules of the game, Craig joked, “Are you asking me that? ‘Do I need to write down the answer? I might get it wrong,'” he said, only partially jesting.
“Too many.”
Craig glanced at Drew Starkey, the one who’d penned the response he envied: “That’s too many.” Swiftly concurring, he stated “Indeed.” However, not fully satisfied, he then had to recount through his extensive career as Bond. “I’m not sure either,” he admitted after a brief pause. “One, two, three… five? Five,” he confirmed after some thought. Fortunately, he was correct. Post-Casino Royale, Daniel Craig made four more appearances, featuring in Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015), and finally No Time to Die (2021).
Does Daniel Craig Hate James Bond?
Despite extensive PR training, Daniel Craig’s weariness about constant Bond-related questions, such as “Who could be the next James Bond?” and the often controversial “Will there ever be a gay James Bond?”, is evident. This fatigue arises from two primary sources. Primarily, the role of James Bond for 15 years has taken a substantial mental and physical toll on the 56-year-old actor. Not only does he need to maintain the physique suitable for a 00 agent, but also the rigorous stunt work has resulted in numerous injuries.
Over the years, it seems that Craig’s fatigue has intensified due to one main factor: it’s been three years since he portrayed James Bond, and he’s made it clear he won’t reprise the role again. Despite the thrill of embodying the spy, Daniel Craig has chosen to focus on other characters. He currently stars in Rian Johnson’s ‘Knives Out’ series, and his performance in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’ is gaining Oscar attention. It appears he’s making a conscious effort to move away from a role that can limit an actor’s range. Though he’s doing well, the persistent questions about the franchise might be more tiresome than the bottomless chair in ‘Casino Royale’.
