James Bond’s Naomie Harris Cautions Against The Franchise Being ‘Too Modern’, Offers A+ Choice For The New 007

Every James Bond movie has promised us that “James Bond will return.” With the recent news that Amazon MGM has taken over creative control of the character, it seems clear that, while the next Bond movie is still a long way off, those words will come true. But exactly what James Bond will look like when he returns is a huge question.

There have been a lot of opinions on how James Bond may need to change with a new generation, but Naomie Harris, who played Moneypenny during the Daniel Craig years hopes that whoever gets cast, they don’t modernize the franchise too much.

Naomie Harris Doen’t want A “Modern” Bond

Naomie Harris played the iconic role of Moneypenny in three films featuring Daniel Craig as James Bond. After the news broke about Amazon MGM acquiring the franchise, she expressed a particular wish to Harpers Bazaar: she hoped that the character would keep the beloved classic traits that fans have come to recognize. Specifically, she stated that she wanted the character to maintain its timeless qualities.

I just hope they don’t try to make it too modern – we all grew up with Bond, and I think it needs those classic elements for people to connect with it.

Although all James Bond films are generally set during the time period when they were produced, there were noticeable changes in the depiction of the character, particularly when Daniel Craig took over as Bond. Some modernization occurred during this transition.

With Bond clearly set to get some sort of “relaunch” with the next film, and reports that Amazon wants to create some sort of “cinematic universe with streaming series and spinoff movies, it wouldn’t be a shock if there were plans to drastically overhaul Bond on screen.

Yet, it’s precisely because of the timeless aspects cherished by fans that Bond has remained popular over the years, which is why it’s reassuring that not too many changes might occur.

Who Naomie Harris Would Love To See As James Bond

Of course, a lot will likely come down to who gets cast as the next James Bond. For her part, Naomie Harris has an idea, as one of her co-stars in her newest film, Black Bag, she thinks would be a solid choice. As she put it:

Well, I was just in Black Bag with Regé-Jean Page, and he does wear a suit very well.

Ever since Daniel Craig hung up his tuxedo, there’s been quite the buzz about Regé-Jean Page potentially stepping into the role of Bond. I can certainly see him rocking a sharp suit and bringing that signature charm to those classic Bond moments.

Although it seems certain that James Bond will continue to be a male character, there remains a possibility that future Bonds could be of diverse ethnicity. So, while it’s not guaranteed, the idea of Idris Elba playing Bond is technically feasible.
