James Cameron to Direct ‘Ghosts Of Hiroshima’ After ‘Avatar’ Sequels

As a seasoned gamer of blockbuster movies, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation and curiosity upon hearing the news that James Cameron is diving into a new project after his epic saga of Pandora. The man who brought us the colossal Titanic and the groundbreaking Avatar series is now set to direct a film adaptation of Charles Pellegrino’s Ghosts Of Hiroshima, a story that delves deep into the tragic events of World War II.

James Cameron is making arrangements for his life beyond the world of Avatar. The renowned director has acquired the rights to the upcoming book Ghosts Of Hiroshima, and he plans to helm a cinematic interpretation of the atomic bomb narrative titled The Hollywood Reporter has verified.

In August 2025, Charles Pellegrino’s book titled “Ghosts of Hiroshima” will be published by Blackstone Publishing. This book is a follow-up to his 2015 work, “Last Train from Hiroshima,” which is also slated to be adapted into a film and will form its foundation.

Cameron’s movie will loosely depict the actual events surrounding Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a 29-year-old engineer at that time, who is known to be the sole survivor of both atomic bombs detonated over Japan during World War II. On August 6th, he was in Hiroshima for work when the city was bombed by the American forces, and miraculously survived. The following day, he boarded a train to Nagasaki, where another bomb was dropped on August 9th. It is believed that between 110,000 and 210,000 individuals perished due to the bombings.

Cameron, a renowned director, is widely recognized for his work on the ‘Terminator’ series and ‘Aliens’, as well as directing three of the world’s highest-grossing films: ‘Avatar’, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, and ‘Titanic’. This upcoming project would be his first film outside of the ‘Avatar’ universe since 1997’s ‘Titanic’.

He is deep into Avatar: Fire & Ash, which arrives in December 2025, and has two more Avatar films on the docket, though he has stated he could step back from directing them (though that is not definitive).

As a dedicated fan, I’m excited to share that I’ve been privy to some behind-the-scenes connections in the world of cinema. Shane Salerno, from The Story Factory, represents Pellegrino, and we’ve seen him forge a close collaboration with the legendary James Cameron. In fact, they worked together as co-writers on the highly anticipated Avatar sequels. It’s fascinating to know that Cameron is also represented by heavyweights like Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and Greenberg Glusker.

Deadline first reported the news of the deal.
