During the Puppy Bowl on Sunday, it was Krypto who stole the limelight, as David Corenswet – who resembles Clark Kent/Superman – looked on. However, a fresh perspective on Superman was presented, thanks to the real-life inspiration behind Krypto’s character.
During the Animal Planet’s Super Bowl broadcast, director James Gunn, accompanied by his canine companion Ozu, made a surprising appearance. This was a nod to fans that Ozu, their beloved pet, played a significant role in creating Krypto, Superman’s faithful dog companion in this summer’s upcoming Superman film, as an inspiration.
Gunn stated, with Ozu by his side, that Krypto is not only endowed with Superman’s abilities but also shares the lovable and playful traits common in many adorable dogs you might see during today’s Puppy Bowl. In this event, more than 120 rescue dogs, who once resided in shelters, will be showcased as they engage in playful fights, experience victories, and sometimes get sidetracked throughout the day, all while journeying towards stardom.
And now some inspirational words from James Gunn and Ozu 🦸 #PuppyBowl @Superman

Gunn and Ozu plan to present a special Puppy Bowl award, named after Krypto, to the dog who most embodies “extraordinary self-power.
Back in 1955’s issue 210 of Adventure Comics, we were introduced to Krypto, the extraordinary pet. This space-faring companion looks set for stardom with Gunn’s movie hitting theaters on July 11.
The Puppy Bowl encourages the benefits of adopting a shelter dog, as demonstrated by Gunn’s statement, “Adopting [Ozu] was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
In addition to Superman, the cast includes Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as the iconic antagonist Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, and Wendell Pierce playing the editor of Daily Planet, Perry White.
Regarding Krypto, “He’s not just an ordinary dog; there’s much more to him than what we’ve seen in the trailer,” Gunn commented during a press event in December.
The upcoming movie focuses on Superman as the main character, marking over a decade since his solo film debut. It follows “Man of Steel” from 2013, “Superman Returns” in 2006, and four films featuring Christopher Reeve, which were released between 1978 and 1987.
