As a die-hard fan of DC comics and a seasoned connoisseur of blockbuster movies, I find James Gunn‘s approach to the new DC Universe truly inspiring. His ability to straddle the line between the mainstream DCU and the more offbeat Elseworld stories is nothing short of genius.
This week, James Gunn will unveil a revamped DC Universe featuring the team Creature Commandos, but initially, he had considered launching the new cinematic universe with the Caped Crusader. Matt Reeves’ film, The Batman, exists in its own alternate timeline, distinct from other superheroes, and has garnered immense success for crafting a gritty, engaging crime saga that fans adore. Interestingly, it appears that DC Studios did consider integrating Robert Pattinson’s Batman into the larger DC Universe.
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn discussed the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) and was questioned if he initially considered incorporating “The Batman” into the broader cinematic universe. Additionally, he mentioned whether his perspective has changed regarding keeping things distinct. Gunn hinted that he has given thought to everything concerning the rebooted universe, and Batman is no different in this regard. However, he guaranteed fans that he remains dedicated to creating tales that lie outside the DCU’s established canon, with Pattinson’s Batman being a part of that creative vision.
“But I’m committed to both telling stories in the DCU and Elseworlds stories. I want the freedom to tell Elseworld stories”
It appears that the concept of incorporating Robert Pattinson’s Batman into the DC Universe didn’t progress much. The enduring appeal of The Batman lies in its innovative narrative style, which delves deeply into a personal, realistic storyline. Despite some fans yearning to see live-action Batman integrated into a broader universe and engaging with the more mythical aspects of his comic book lore, as Gunn points out, there’s room for diverse stories under the DC Studios umbrella, even ones like The Batman and Superman: Red Son.
DC Studios Embraces Different Universes & Stories
It appears that James Gunn’s DC Studios is striking a unique balance in the realm of shared cinematic universes. By initiating a rebooted DC Universe with projects like “Creature Commandos” and “Superman” next year, they aim to capitalize on stories set outside this universe, such as “Elseworlds” tales like “The Batman” and “The Penguin.” Interestingly, the controversial “Joker” sequel released earlier this year was not endorsed by Gunn or DC Studios, but this doesn’t change the fact that they are embracing a daring approach by accommodating multiple timelines and creative visions. This strategy could potentially set DC Studios apart from the MCU, which is grappling with audience fatigue post-“Avengers: Endgame.
It remains uncertain whether the DC Universe (DCU) will prosper under its new leadership or falter significantly, with only The Batman standing out as a universally praised DC film. However, regardless of the success or failure of either, they won’t have catastrophic consequences for each other. Notably, Gunn and his team are being meticulous about approving DCU projects, only moving forward with production once the scripts are completely finalized – a strategy that Marvel might want to consider as well.
