James Gunn Explained Why The Brave And The Bold Might Take A While To Get Produced, And As A Batman Fan, I’m Conflicted

As a lifelong Batman fan who has witnessed the evolution of Gotham’s Dark Knight across multiple generations and interpretations, I find myself standing at the precipice of yet another exciting chapter in the Caped Crusader’s storied history. The prospect of two live-action Batmans coexisting within separate realities is a tantalizing one, and it’s not every day that we get to see such a rich tapestry unfold before our eyes.

Following the appearance of both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton’s portrayals of Batman in The Flash last year, along with George Clooney in an unexpected guest role, we are approaching a time when two live-action versions of the Caped Crusader will coexist in distinct realities. On one side, there is Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne, who was introduced in 2022’s The Batman and dwells within the interconnected universe known as the “Batman Epic Crime Saga.” On the other hand, the guardian of Gotham City will also inhabit the new DC Universe franchise and is set to debut in The Brave and the Bold. Unfortunately, it seems that the production of this upcoming DC film may take some time, and as a Batman enthusiast, I find myself grappling with this delay.

Fans of Batman can rest easy knowing that Robert Pattinson’s next outing as the Caped Crusader, titled The Batman: Part II, is slated for release in late 2026. However, regarding the spin-off series The Brave and the Bold, James Gunn, joint chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, has emphasized that there’s no hurry to introduce the DC Universe’s Batman. The reason being, they prioritize ensuring the story is compelling before rushing into its telling. In his own words:

The production timeline for our projects is flexible and heavily reliant on the quality of the screenplays we receive. Since day one, we’ve emphasized that the creative input from our writers will drive everything in DC. Until a screenplay fully satisfies us, the corresponding project won’t move forward, regardless of its nature. Fortunately, we’ve encountered some exceptional screenplays such as ‘Supergirl’, ‘Lanterns’ pilot, and now the entire ‘Lanterns’ series. There are also other promising projects in development that you might not be aware of, but it all depends on the narrative. Ultimately, if we’re pleased with the story we’re telling, that’s what truly matters. Once ‘The Brave and the Bold’ reaches a satisfying script stage, then we can proceed with making the movie.

It’s crucial that storytelling takes precedence in every aspect of filmmaking. All too frequently, studio deadlines push the production process, leading to incomplete or poorly executed films, such as some superhero movies released before their scripts were finalized or when the story wasn’t fully developed. James Gunn aims to avoid this issue with “The Brave and the Bold” and other DC Universe projects by ensuring a completed script is approved before production begins, and I wholeheartedly support his approach.

Although I’m quite looking forward to it, I must admit I feel a bit let down knowing that it might be several years before “The Brave and the Bold” hits the screens, as I find the overall concept intriguing. In early 2023, when the DC Universe was unveiled, James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed that their Batman film will feature Bruce Wayne partnering with his son Damian, who will be assuming the role of Robin.

To be clear, I’ve found the Crime Saga of The Batman and The Penguin series quite engaging (you can watch them both in their entirety with a Max subscription), but The Brave and the Bold is piquing my interest due to its exploration of the father-son relationship. I’m excited to see how this will unfold. Moreover, since The Brave and the Bold takes place in a world brimming with superheroes and metahumans, it has the freedom to delve into more fantastical elements that the Batman films starring Pattinson can’t.

Apart from the fact that Andy Muschietti, known for his work with The Flash, will direct The Brave and the Bold, not much else has been disclosed. Once significant updates emerge, such as its release date, we’ll keep you informed. Meanwhile, the DC Universe is set to launch next month with the premiere of Creature Commandos on Max. Superman is scheduled for a theater release on July 11, 2025, according to their movie schedule.
