James Gunn Give Long-Awaited Update on DC's Wonder Woman Prequel Show: Paradise Lost

As a seasoned movie critic with over two decades of experience, I’ve seen studios rise and fall, promises made and broken, characters loved and forgotten, and more sequels than I care to remember. But the recent updates from James Gunn about the DC Studios’ Paradise Lost series have rekindled my hope for a well-crafted cinematic universe that truly does justice to its characters.

Fear not, fans of Wonder Woman! Despite some speculation, James Gunn’s DC Studios’ Paradise Lost series remains a top priority for him. This exciting project was initially announced in early 2023 as part of the ‘Gods & Monsters’ phase of the new DC Universe, alongside other titles like Gunn’s own Superman, The Brave and the Bold, Lanterns, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Although other projects seem to be moving forward, there have been concerns that Paradise Lost, based on Wonder Woman’s home island Themyscira, might have been put aside. However, Gunn, who is active on social media, has given the series a reassuring update to keep our hopes alive.

In response to a fan’s inquiry about his weekend plans, director James Gunn shared some insights on the progress of his ongoing DC Studios projects. He mentioned he was busy with editing notes for Superman and Creature Commandos, as well as storyboarding for Peacemaker. The trio of projects has been generating a lot of buzz lately. Moreover, Gunn hinted at potential updates on new DC projects in the near future, keeping fans on their toes.

He went on to mention that he now needs to go over some scripts he hasn’t looked at yet.” Interestingly, most projects announced during the ‘Gods & Monsters’ phase have seen updates recently, even new unexpected ones. However, it seems only Paradise Lost and Booster Gold were left untouched. Yet, James Gunn has now addressed this for Paradise Lost, as he was asked about its status. When a fan inquired if scripts were being worked on for the series, all James Gunn said was that drafts were presumably being sent in.

“Yes.”

DC Studios Are Making Good on Their Promised Projects

The film and television world is constantly evolving, with fresh ideas being approved, proposed, postponed, scrapped, hyped, and launched almost every minute. It’s a challenge for studios to manage and bring to fruition every project that gets announced. This is a sensation that fans of Marvel and DC are familiar with. In the prime of the MCU, new projects were given the green light on a weekly basis, and many eventually ended up being put on hold or completely overlooked.

When Zack Snyder initially established the DC Universe (formerly DCEU), various films were unveiled, only for some of them to be scrapped following the underwhelming audience response to the universe’s movies. Fortunately, James Gunn and Peter Safran, now in charge at DC Studios, are working diligently to correct past errors, ensuring that every project gets the attention it deserves as they strategize their future lineup.

The director has shared plans to bring one of DC Comics’ less frequently utilized characters, Nightwing (also known as Dick Grayson, the original Robin), to the big screen in a fair and respectful manner. For almost a decade, discussions about a Nightwing film have gone back and forth at Warner Bros., with Adam McKay (known for “The Big Short”) once slated to direct. However, these plans were put on hold after several years of development delays. Now, Dick Grayson will feature in two upcoming projects: an animated movie pairing him with another character, Jason Todd; and the newly announced Teen Titans film, as he was one of the original members of this comic book team. Although these projects have yet to be released for public viewing, it seems that James Gunn and Peter Safran are taking care to strategize the DC Universe’s timeline before announcing new movies and series, aiming to deliver on their promises.
