The superhero genre remains a dominant force in the entertainment industry, as several interconnected movie universes vie for success at the box office. Fans are particularly intrigued by forthcoming DC films that will unfold within a freshly constructed shared universe devised by co-CEO James Gunn. As of now, it’s unclear which film project this esteemed director is currently working on following Superman.
The information we have about Superman is not extensive, but it’s set to be the initial live-action venture in the DCU’s series called Gods and Monsters. However, those with a Max subscription had an early glimpse of the animated series titled Creature Commandos, which Gunn also penned. In his latest post on Threads, he detailed what his current role at the studio involves, mentioning:
As a devoted cinephile immersed in the world of DC Studios, my days are primarily occupied with post-production work on Superman and Peacemaker. Yet, there’s always time set aside for pre-writing my upcoming project within the DC Universe. Additionally, I find myself engrossed in watching dailies and offering creative suggestions for other ongoing projects. It’s a far cry from the intensity of directing, making it much more manageable now.
In that case, it appears he was quite busy directing Superman, yet he seems to manage other duties as a studio head effectively. Now, I’m curious about which writing endeavor he is currently preparing for.
Upon the unveiling of “When Gods and Monsters,” a plethora of upcoming TV and film titles were also revealed. Given this abundance, it appears that James Gunn may be tasked with writing several intriguing projects for the expanding shared universe. Among these anticipated works are “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” the animated “Dynamic Duo” featuring Robin, and “The Brave and The Bold.” However, with numerous productions slated for both small and large screens, any one of them could potentially be the next writing assignment for the director of “Guardians of the Galaxy.” That is, assuming he’s not engaged in other universe-building duties for the DCU.
There’s a significant expectation for Superman to impress in cinemas and generate excitement among viewers about the freshly created universe. The initial Superman trailer has provided a glimpse into Gunn’s vibrant world, featuring various superheroes and his loyal pet, Krypton.
It seems clear that Gunn is putting his A-game into work for DC, infusing both Superman and Creature Commandos with his distinctive flair. Whichever title he pens next is surely fortunate to have him involved. I can’t help but wish time would hurry up so we can jump into the new DC Universe more swiftly – all the more so since the MCU shows no indication of slowing down.
On June 21st, you’ll find Superman gracing the big screen! In the meantime, let’s take a peek at the planned movie releases in 2025.
