James Gunn Officially Confirms MonsterVerse Star as Green Lantern in HBO Series

As a movie enthusiast who has been around since the golden age of cinema, I must say that the news about Kyle Chandler playing Hal Jordan in the upcoming HBO series, Lanterns, is nothing short of electrifying! While I’ve enjoyed Josh Brolin’s stellar performances as Cable and Thanos, it seems fate had other plans for the Green Lantern suit.

Independent of your personal opinions about the movie, the 2011 film “Green Lantern” featuring Ryan Reynolds was a highly controversial production that even Reynolds himself sometimes jokes about. Following this film, there was no live-action appearance of Hal Jordan, causing speculation among fans if it would ever reoccur. Excitement grew when it was disclosed that a new “Lanterns” series was being created within James Gunn’s DC universe. At last, the anticipation subsides as Kyle Chandler has been confirmed to portray Hal Jordan in the forthcoming HBO series, titled “Lanterns.

After a long wait, it’s finally confirmed! Here it is: Kyle Chandler has joined the DC Universe as our Hal Jordan. Welcome aboard, Kyle!

The 59-year-old actor is primarily recognized for his performances in movies like Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” and the MonsterVerse series, marking this as his debut portrayal of a superhero. Some of his other notable roles include those in “Argo,” “Super 8,” “Friday Night Lights,” and “Bloodline.” Previous speculation had suggested he was a contender for the role, but it wasn’t until Pierre’s casting that this was officially confirmed. Despite expectations, another well-known actor came very close to donning the superhero costume instead.

Josh Brolin Almost Played Hal Jordan in Lanterns

Josh Brolin has had a significant career in the superhero genre, with roles as Cable in “Deadpool 2” and Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he nearly added to his comic book movie history by playing Hal Jordan. However, that didn’t materialize due to Chandler getting the part instead. In September, Brolin confirmed rumors about his potential casting.

“It turns out Green Lantern didn’t succeed, but that’s alright. Things change, though. Could it be Kyle Chandler they’re considering? I’m a big fan of his talent, he’s truly remarkable. We’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds.

It appears that Brolin is expressing a willingness to revisit the superhero realm, so fans might not want to completely rule out the possibility of him playing another character. Since Brolin is 56 years old, it’s less likely he’ll take on a leading role in the future, but being part of an ensemble cast like Lanterns could be a suitable option for him instead.

Lanterns is being produced under Gunn’s DC Studios, and instead of being a movie, it will be a TV series consisting of eight episodes airing on HBO. Although it may connect with the broader universe, its television format offers more opportunities for expansion. Much like Peacemaker, it will be deeply rooted in the DC universe but primarily tell an independent story. With the main cast now finalized, production can commence. As of now, Lanterns does not have a scheduled release date, but if production progresses swiftly, a late 2025 launch is possible.

Excitedly speaking as a fellow DC enthusiast, I can’t help but share my anticipation! In the interim, DC aficionados like us can eagerly await the formal commencement of James Gunn’s DCU with the debut of “Creature Commandos” in December. Much like “Green Lantern,” this is a TV series, so those yearning for a cinematic experience will have to wait until 2025’s “Superman” graces our screens.
