James Gunn reveals why he didn’t direct Superman before

Recently, the esteemed movie director had a question-and-answer session in London where he disclosed the reasons behind turning down an opportunity to direct Superman back in 2018.

James Gunn candidly discussed his initial apprehensions about directing Superman in 2018. He admitted, “Initially, I declined the offer to direct Superman due to the daunting nature of the task. I wasn’t confident about how I would pull it off. Moreover, there were complications surrounding Superman at that time, making it a potentially politically complex situation.

Additionally, Gunn expressed that he chose the 2021 film “The Suicide Squad” over Superman because it was already known to him. In other words, he stated, “I passed on it and opted for ‘The Suicide Squad,’ a team type that I was more accustomed to, which I’m pleased I did. It was enjoyable.

Over the years, the character of Superman has been a persistent thought in my mind, a recurring theme that I couldn’t shake off. I found myself pondering, “What if I were to create a new version of Superman? How would it look? What story would it tell? How could I make it resonate with modern audiences? How could it touch people’s hearts?” Eventually, the idea grew on me that perhaps this was a challenge I could take on.

Consequently, James Gunn stated that when he was presented with the chance to direct Superman, he eagerly accepted it. “Three years ago, when they proposed the concept of writing Superman to me, I agreed,” he further explained.

Meanwhile, Superman is set to hit theaters on Friday, July 11, 2025.
