In their debut chapter of the revamped DC Universe (DCU), titled “Gods and Monsters,” James Gunn and Peter Safran have indeed delivered on the promise of the title, given the progression of recent projects. The introduction of “Creature Commandos” sets the stage for this new continuity, with “Superman” slated as the first feature film. This suggests a diverse range of tones that the interconnected universe of films can aim for in the future. Now, another project is underway that will underscore the ‘monsters’ aspect of the subtitle for DC Studios’ inaugural chapter: the upcoming “Clayface” movie has been gathering notable talent, and according to Gunn, the script is one of the finest he’s read for the new DCU.
According to The Wrap’s report, during a DC Studios Panel where both Gunn and Safran shared updates on upcoming projects, they mentioned the Clayface movie. This film, which was not originally in their plans, caught their attention due to Mike Flanagan’s (known for Fall of the House of Usher and The Life of Chuck) terrifying horror script. Gunn expressed that the studio decided to include it in their lineup because of this compelling screenplay.
Originally, there were no intentions to produce a ‘Clayface’ film. However, Mike (Flanagan) proposed an intriguing idea for a ‘Clayface’ movie, which turned out fantastic…and when he submitted his script, it was one of the standout scripts we read throughout the entire period.
According to their descriptions, it appears that the character Clayface is shaping up to have a stronger focus on horror elements, making it one of the first productions within the new DC Universe to explore this genre cinematically.
‘Clayface’ Will Be a Body Horror Film
Apart from James Gunn’s insights, Peter Safran will also share some thoughts about the project. Notably, James Watkins (director of the 2024 remake of “Speak No Evil”) is reportedly in talks to direct it. Safran expresses great enthusiasm for the film because he feels that this Batman villain is equally intriguing and captivating as some of the more renowned villains from the Caped Crusader’s rogues gallery.
This project fits perfectly within the DC Universe, giving us a chance to explore Gotham City. The prospect of creating a horror movie for DC felt like a wonderful gift. What makes it special is that it’s a chilling body horror film that delves into the origin of a popular Batman villain.
He further mentioned, “Clayface may not be as famous as Penguin or the Joker, but we believe his tale carries an equal amount of emotional resonance and excitement. In fact, it could even be more frightening.
As I’ve been following the swift progression of the project, it appears that the two heads of DC Studios are deeply convinced that Clayface holds immense potential, aligning with Gunn’s philosophy of storytelling first and foremost. Given Flanagan’s knack for crafting chilling horror narratives with a strong human touch, I can only imagine he’s discovered an intriguing body-horror aspect reminiscent of the current critically-acclaimed horror film, The Substance. This upcoming DCU film, therefore, stands out as the most enticing prospect in the entire lineup for me.
