As a lifelong comic book enthusiast and a devoted fan of James Gunn‘s cinematic universe-building prowess, I am beyond excited for the arrival of the new Superman film. The casting choices are nothing short of inspired, and I can hardly wait to see how David Corenswet brings the iconic character to life on the big screen.
preparations for our initial glimpse of the revamped Superman within the DC Universe are gaining momentum, as DC Studios’ co-president and director James Gunn has offered tantalizing hints about the film’s production progress. This upcoming movie will mark the beginning of the new DCU’s silver screen adventures, following Creature Commandos’ debut in December on Max. While specific plot details remain shrouded in secrecy, the film boasts an impressive lineup of actors, including David Corenswet (Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Milly Alcock (Supergirl), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Wendell Pierce (Perry White), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl) and numerous others. Filming concluded on the movie in July, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the release of the first trailer.
On the topic of discussions (since that’s where James Gunn usually shares updates about DC Studios), Gunn confirmed that he’s diligently working on the initial trailer for Superman. When a fan inquired whether the trailer is already done, the director offered a hopeful reply suggesting it isn’t quite finished yet.
“It’s not. I worked on it this weekend.”
Although some might be disheartened by the delay in release of the new movie, Gunn, known for his meticulous work, is taking his time with the project to guarantee exceptional quality. After filming concluded in July, Gunn himself explained the extended post-production phase, expressing a desire to provide ample time for the VFX artists to perfect their work.
Earlier this month at New York Comic Con, during a panel for Creature Commandos, Gunn discussed Superman’s upcoming trailer. He provided fans with some insight into when they might expect to see the trailer, stating that “we’re in the thick of editing.” Director Gunn also highly commended David Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman, expressing his belief that Corenswet will leave viewers speechless. Lastly, Gunn tantalized the audience with a hint about the trailer, saying:
“It won’t be too long before we see a trailer, but also it won’t be soon.”
Superman Will Introduce Countless DC Comics Heroes
Modern comic book films often prioritize launching multiple sequels and spin-offs at the expense of crafting a strong narrative. However, James Gunn’s comic book adaptations have generally been self-contained stories, with each film functioning effectively as a standalone piece, much like his debut for DC, “The Suicide Squad,” and the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy.
I couldn’t help but feel puzzled and worried when Gunn revealed the cast for Superman, as it seemed easier to name the characters who wouldn’t be featured in the film. The concern among fans is that Gunn’s debut DCU movie might be overloaded with comic book heroes, potentially diverting attention from crafting a compelling standalone story and instead focusing on laying the groundwork for the DCU’s inaugural phase, ‘Gods & Monsters.’ Yet, as long-time supporters of Gunn’s work, we’re putting our trust in his creative process. It seems that James Gunn is drawing heavily from the beloved comic books to build his DC Universe, creating a world where superheroes and villains are a common occurrence, and well-known (and underestimated) heroes will pop up across different projects.
