James Gunn Reveals First Look at Superman's Dog, Krypto, in DCU Reboot

As a movie buff with a soft spot for canine characters and a deep appreciation for the power of redemption stories, I am thrilled to see Krypto making his way into the DCU. Having adopted a troubled dog myself, I can relate to James Gunn‘s experience with Ozu, and I find it heartwarming that this real-life inspiration has found its way into one of the most iconic superhero narratives of all time.

Krypto, Superman’s trusted friend, is now officially part of the DC Universe. Not only did co-president of the DCU, James Gunn, unveil the first image of the character, but he also shared insights about the real-life inspiration for this iconic sidekick. Created by writer Otto Binder and artist Curt Swan, Krypto debuted in Adventure Comics #210 back in March 1955. Over the years, Krypto has played a significant role in Superman’s mythos. He starred in his own animated series, “Krypto the Superdog,” and had a standalone movie titled “DC’s League of Super-Pets.” Finally, Krypto will be brought to life on screen for the first time within James Gunn’s DCU, with appearances expected to start in “Superman.

James Gunn unveiled the initial glimpse of Krypto via X, confirming that this character will make his appearance in the upcoming movie “Superman“, slated for release on July 11, 2025. Interestingly, Krypto’s creation was inspired by a real-life dog named Ozu, who Gunn and his wife Jennifer Holland adopted. Prior to their adoption, Ozu hailed from a difficult background and had a knack for damaging furniture and even laptops – making Gunn ponder what it would be like if such a pup had superpowers. It appears that Krypto will play a significant role in “Superman“, as Gunn mentioned that the character significantly altered the script’s shape. In addition, Gunn advocated for adopting shelter dogs like Ozu and providing them with loving homes during October, which is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.

This summer, Krypto makes his appearance in Superman! Interestingly enough, Krypto was modeled after our canine companion, Ozu, whom we welcomed into our home shortly following the inception of Superman’s story. At first, Ozu, who had been rescued from a deplorable situation with over 60 other dogs, proved to be quite the handful – he wrecked our house, shoes, furniture, and even managed to chew up my laptop! It took quite some time before we could even approach him without incident. As I grappled with Ozu’s challenging behavior, a thought crossed my mind: “Wow, how tough would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” And so, Krypto found his place in the script, transforming the narrative as Ozu was transforming my own life. Given that it’s Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, we think it’s fitting to introduce the somewhat mischievous yet lovable Krypto! It’s worth mentioning that these days, Ozu can often be found being a very good boy. #Superman #AdoptAShelterDog

Previously, DC writer Mark Waid had suggested that Krypto might join the DC Universe after visiting the Superman set earlier in the year. Since then, Gunn has been captivated by Krypto. In fact, before he was appointed to direct The Suicide Squad, Gunn contemplated creating a movie about Krypto. Now, at long last, he gets the opportunity to bring his unique take on Krypto to life.

Krypto the Superdog

James Gunn’s compassion for animals and their wellbeing is deeply felt, as evident in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” where it delves into the wickedness of animal cruelty by portraying Rocket’s past under the High Evolutionary. Although “Superman” may not be as harrowing, Gunn’s remarks about Krypto influencing the script for “Superman” hint at some risky aspects. It’ll be intriguing to see if Krypto is modeled after a canine from Krypton, like in the comics, or if Gunn reimagines him as an animal testing experiment by LexCorp, much like how “Smallville” depicted the character.

It’s probable that we’re just seeing the start of Krypto’s journey, as he plays a significant role in the comic “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which DC Studios is transforming into a movie with Milly Alcock as the main character. With Superman, Supergirl, and Krypto all set to appear, James Gunn’s DC Studios is clearly focusing on the Man of Steel as the cornerstone for the franchise. Although two Batman-focused projects, “The Brave and the Bold” and “Dynamic Duo,” are being developed, it’s refreshing to see Superman receiving attention once more in the limelight.
