Currently, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) operates smoothly, consistently delivering fresh content in cinemas and through streaming on Disney+. On the other hand, the DC Universe (DCU) is in a phase of growth, starting with the release of “Creature Commandos” (streaming with Max subscription), and gearing up for James Gunn‘s “Superman” to take flight in theatres. Gunn, who serves as co-CEO of the studio, has also passed on insights from his Marvel tenure to the Guardians of the Galaxy series.
Our understanding of Superman is somewhat restricted, but a new DC movie is set to premiere in July. The esteemed director shared with Entertainment Weekly his ideas for Superman, stating that it will be grounded in his character traits, much like the Guardians films. In Gunn’s words:
“The approach we are taking with Superman will stay true to his essence, as we’ve done with the Guardians.
From a die-hard fan perspective, I believe James Gunn’s unique style has perfectly set the stage for these movies so far. Moving forward, I yearn for each film to maintain that essence, yet not be carbon copies of one another. When speaking with Craig Gillespie about Supergirl, I expressed my desire for diversity among the films, avoiding a monotonous repetition of themes and tones.
What draws me to DC Comics is the richness of its stories, each as distinct as The Dark Knight, Superman for All Seasons, All-Star Superman, and The Long Halloween. These are all masterpieces within the same universe, but with completely different flavors. And that’s what I find truly exciting.
It appears that Gunn envisions the DC Universe as a space where directors can express their unique perspectives on established intellectual properties. While he will likely maintain the characteristic music-heavy and unconventional tone of previous projects, Gunn aims to inspire other DC directors to have similar creative freedom.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about Max, the ultimate streaming platform for all things DC! When discussing how he wants DC directors to have creative freedom, James Gunn referenced his experience working on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly during the early days when the Guardians of the Galaxy were debuting and interacting with other characters. He stated:
“During my time in the MCU, especially when we were introducing the Guardians and collaborating with other characters, I was able to feel creatively empowered.
From my experience at Marvel, I believe I grasped that allowing creators to develop distinctive visions for characters is key to engaging audiences. For instance, when Guardians of the Galaxy was released, many wondered how a raccoon would interact with Thor, given their contrasting roles in different genres. However, this very aspect was what made Infinity War stand out and intriguing for viewers. So it’s all about fostering an environment that encourages artists to showcase these characters in diverse ways, enabling us to connect with them on multiple levels.
It wasn’t unthinkable, despite initial doubts, that the eccentric personalities from Guardians of the Galaxy would cross paths with stalwarts like Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America. And indeed, they did, leading to intriguing storylines and ample opportunities for humor.
It appears that the initial lineup of DCU projects, known as “Gods and Monsters,” is shaping up to be quite diverse, encompassing both animated and live-action productions. James Gunn expresses eagerness about merging these realms in the future and hints at what’s in store for Superman characters, stating:
I eagerly anticipate the moment when these characters make their appearances – one not too far off, while two may arrive together. The intrigue lies in witnessing them in an entirely fresh perspective, perhaps in a genre that deviates from their usual, maybe a more dramatic or comedic rendition. Regardless of the change, I’m excited to see these familiar faces portray these characters in a new light.
I must say, I find this development quite captivating. It seems that Gunn has expressed a dedication towards creating a unified DC Universe, and it appears as though actors from the Superman series may reappear in future projects.
The connected cinematic universe will kick off in theaters when Superman is set to premiere on July 11th, as part of the 2025 film schedule. James Gunn’s announcement has me optimistic about this shared universe, but it might make the gap between projects feel even longer.
