James Gunn, one of the co-CEOs at DC Studios, has disclosed that a particular scene from the debut episode of the Peacemaker Season 1 won’t be part of the ongoing storyline in the DC Universe. Anticipation builds as the John Cena-led series within the DCU is set to resume on HBO Max on August 21, marking the start of its eagerly awaited second season.
In the creation, writing, and direction of Gunn, “Peacemaker” is brought to life, with Gunn also assuming the role of its executive producer. The upcoming season 2 promises the return of stars like Cena, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick. In addition, new faces join the cast, including Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows.
Which Peacemaker Season 1 scene isn’t canon to the DCU?
In the first installment of the Peacemaker Podcast, Gunn revealed exclusive backstage anecdotes and fascinating tidbits about Peacemaker Season 1 Episode 1. Among these revelations, he discussed a scene from the episode that might have been altered due to the DC Universe (DCU).
As a dedicated fan, I was thrilled to witness the opening scene in the first episode, where Cena’s Peacemaker had a side-splitting argument with a hospital worker about Aquaman. However, when asked about it, director James Gunn hinted that we should overlook this scene as Aquaman won’t be a widely recognized superhero within the current timeline of his DC Universe.
One point that often leaves people puzzled when Peter Safran and I took charge of DC is: what exactly belongs to the DC Universe? To put it simply, this universe houses Superman, as well as the Creature Commandos. Until now, these are the only elements that are absolutely canonical. The same rule applies to Peacemaker Season 2. It’s entirely canonical within the DC, but we had to make some adjustments from Season 1. Gunn made this clear.
Is Aquaman part of the official DC Universe (DCU)? It’s unclear at this point. However, considering that Peacemaker Season 2 is being made and not everyone in the DCU enjoys the same level of fame as Superman, it seems improbable to me that Aquaman would be a well-known hero within the DCU. That said, I believe most other elements in this episode are part of the canon.
