James Gunn Teases His Next DCU Movie Following ‘Superman’

James Gunn Teases His Next DCU Movie Following 'Superman'

As a die-hard DC fan with years of comics under my belt and countless hours spent in the cinematic universe, I can confidently say that James Gunn is nothing short of a modern-day superhero himself. With his fingers in numerous pies, from writing scripts for “Creature Commandos” to directing “Superman” starring David Corenswet, and co-president of DC Studios, it’s a wonder he finds time to breathe!

James Gunn hasn’t even released the first trailer for Superman: Legacy yet, (let alone the entire film) but he’s already looking ahead to his next DCU movie. It’s safe to say that Gunn is one of the busiest people in Hollywood at the moment. In addition to writing the scripts for the upcoming Creature Commandos series, as well as writing and directing Superman starring David Corenswet, Gunn is also the co-president of DC Studios with Peter Safran, and is in charge of orchestrating the entire DC Universe. While we’re all waiting to see Gunn’s interpretation of Superman, overly-eager DC fans are already asking, “what’s next?”

In a conversation with Collider, Gunn discussed his upcoming plans in the DC Universe, hinting at what lies ahead beyond Superman. Although he didn’t explicitly mention his next project, Gunn playfully suggested that he has several potential options to consider. When asked if he had already decided on his next venture, Gunn replied succinctly, “I haven’t.” The director revealed that he will explore four different projects, testing which one aligns best with his creative vision and the broader DC Universe context. He further added:

I have several options at hand, and I plan on exploring each one briefly. Whichever resonates with me strongly will be the one I proceed with.

As a die-hard film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel exhilarated about my role in steering three upcoming DC Universe projects. Not only am I responsible for guiding the entire franchise, but I also have the privilege of introducing John Cena’s Peacemaker character into the DCU family. While the first season wasn’t initially part of the new DCU continuity, I’m thrilled to confirm that the upcoming second season will be set squarely within the rebooted universe.

Not Every DCU Project Will Be Completed

DC Studios has unveiled additional projects to their original lineup, which was initially revealed for development in 2023. The newest announcements encompass an animated film featuring Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, a joint Deathstroke-Bane movie (James Gunn seems particularly fond of crossovers), and a long-awaited Teen Titans film. However, it’s important to note that not every project announced will ultimately reach either the big or small screen.

It’s crucial to understand the distinction between these phases. The ventures under DCU’s Gods & Monsters banner are indeed in progress, but not yet in full-scale production – they’re currently in the development stage. In this phase, creative minds like Gunn and DC Studios are considering various ideas proposed by writers and filmmakers. If an idea is approved, it will advance into pre-production and eventually production, with the ultimate goal of being polished and ready for our enjoyment as viewers.

James Gunn has emphasized that DC Studios will not settle for mediocre work when it comes to their projects. In fact, he highlighted that the quality of each DC Universe production hinges on the strength of its script first and foremost.

I won’t greenlight the production of that movie until I am completely satisfied with the screenplay. Regardless of its content, it won’t be made unless it meets my standards.
