James Gunn Unveils Official Trailer For Creature Commandos at NYCC

As a cinema enthusiast with a penchant for superhero tales and a soft spot for the quirky, I must say that the upcoming “Creature Commandos” series by James Gunn is shaping up to be an exhilarating addition to the DC Universe. Having grown up reading comics and being captivated by the oddball charm of these characters in “Weird War Tales”, it’s thrilling to see them finally get their due on the big screen, or rather, the small one.

Fans recently caught a glimpse of the inaugural project in James Gunn’s revamped DC universe when the co-president of DC Studios unveiled a fresh trailer for the animated series, Creature Commandos, at New York Comic-Con. The announcement of Gunn’s DC lineup under the title “Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters” left fans in awe, as they hadn’t expected to see _Creature Commandos_ on the roster. What’s more, it was also revealed that this animated series would serve as the inaugural entry into James Gunn’s freshly minted DC universe.

While the first trailer shown at San Diego Comic-Con in July gave a general pitch for the series, this new trailer highlights the characters that make up the Creature Commandos and hints at their backstories. Fans get to see action showcasing The Bride, Frankenstein’s Monster, Doctor Phosphorus, The Weasel, G.I. Robot, Nina Mazursky, and even the main villain, Circe. Gunn and Warner Bros. also are letting fans know this is a new era for the franchise, as the trailer’s tagline features “From James Gunn Comes The New DCU.”

The Creature Commandos team, conceived by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, debuted in Weird War Tales issue #93, published in November 1980. Similar to Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the Creature Commandos were a relatively lesser-known comic book group. However, their eccentric personalities and outsider vibe resonate well with Gunn’s creative style. Gunn penned all seven episodes of Creature Commandos and served as its executive producer. Moreover, renowned French comics artist Yves “Balak” Bigerel is the series’ head director.

The New DCU Begins With Creature Commandos

In a new and exciting turn, James Gunn’s “Creature Commandos” marks his debut in the DC Universe. Subsequently, the character played by Frank Grillo, Rick Flag Sr., will make appearances in “Superman” and “Peacemaker” Season 2 set for release in 2025. Interestingly, it seems that events from “Peacemaker” Season 1 might still be part of Gunn’s new DCU continuity, as the compulsion for Amanda Waller to utilize non-human creatures like the Creature Commandos appears to stem from the aftermath of Task Force X activities being exposed by Waller’s daughter Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks). Furthermore, a character known as The Weasel, who was initially depicted as the first member of the squad to perish in Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” surprisingly managed to survive, as hinted at in the film’s mid-credit scene.

Gunn’s Creature Commandos is slated to premiere on Max on December 5, 2024, and it’s one of the most eagerly awaited shows for the remainder of the year. DC’s other prominent series, The Penguin, will end on November 10, 2024. Following this, Dune: Prophecy will assume HBO’s highly valued Sunday spot starting November 17, 2024, and it will continue until January 5, 2025.
