Contains spoilers for “Superman“
In the film “Superman,” while it remains faithful to the original comic book character and aesthetic, as it introduces a fresh take on the last son of Krypton and develops a new DC universe, there is one significant alteration in the storyline that may stir debates among comic book enthusiasts. This change was orchestrated by writer-director James Gunn.
In the beginning of the film Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet, encounters a recording sent from his biological parents, Jor-El (Bradley Cooper) and Lara (Angela Sarafyan), during their escape from Krypton. This message conveyed their love for him and encouraged him to protect his new planet. Unfortunately, the last few seconds were damaged during transit, but the inspiring words resonated with Superman, significantly influencing his decision to become a superhero.
In a devious scheme, Lex Luthor retrieves the missing part of the recording, making its contents significantly sinister. It’s revealed that Superman’s parents were urging him to become Earth’s ruler and father multiple wives to continue the Kryptonian race. This shocking revelation and Superman’s struggle with his faith form a major part of the movie’s narrative. The finale of “Superman” fails to reverse this unexpected change in lore, suggesting that in the new DCU, at least, Superman’s parents may be portrayed as villainous figures.
What are Superman’s parents like in the comics?
In the DC Comics world, it took quite some time for readers to discover who Superman’s biological parents actually were. While we met Martha and Jonathan Kent (Clark Kent’s adoptive parents) right from the start of Superman’s tale, his birth parents, Jor-El and Lara, didn’t make their entrance until a full decade after Superman first debuted, in a story titled “The Origin of Superman.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share an alternative perspective on the iconic duo, Jor-El and Lara. Instead of sending their only son with the intention of ruling Earth, they were simply searching for a means to ensure his survival amidst Krypton’s impending doom. Being a brilliant scientist, Jor-El managed to seize control of one final spaceship to transport their son off the planet in the nick of time. This compassionate portrayal of Superman’s parents is the one that moviegoers have grown attached to throughout all the “Superman” films.
In addition to adding some drama to the latest “Superman” movie, this significant shift might also pave the way for exciting plot developments down the line. Since comic enthusiasts may find it challenging to accept an antagonistic Jor-El and Lara, some may be secretly hoping that the DC Universe will eventually rewrite this history. For now, Superman’s Kryptonian parents in the DCU are part of a backstory that leaves many comic readers with unanswered questions.
