It’s been mentioned that DC Studios is thinking about launching two spin-off series following the story of Superman, which could potentially enrich the new DC Universe. The original Superman series not only introduced David Corenswet as Man of Steel but also paved the way for several other DCU projects such as The Authority, Lanterns, Supergirl, and Peacemaker’s second season, by introducing various characters from both the hero and villain sides.
As per a report from The Wall Street Journal, James Gunn is contemplating several TV spin-offs based on this summer’s Superman. These potential shows would feature Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, two of the DCU blockbuster’s most beloved characters.
Mr. Terrific has been one of the standout performers in Superman, with audiences and critics alike commending Gathegi’s portrayal and the character’s thrilling desert action sequences set to the tune of “5 Years Time.” Given this success, the prospect of an HBO Max series focusing on DC Comics’ sharpest superhero is sure to excite many fans.
The two possible DC Studios are currently in their infancy and may not advance for quite some time, if they progress at all. However, for any movement to occur, the Superman spin-offs would need to follow Gunn’s established DC Universe practice: having finished scripts on hand first to maintain high quality.
Moreover, should Superman fail, the future of the DC Universe might be at stake, potentially leading to the cancellation of numerous ongoing projects. Among those at risk could be the immediate spin-offs.
In the movie “Superman,” Gisondo and Gathegi are joined by a group of talented actors including David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, and Nicholas Hoult. These stars are currently appearing on the big screen.
Why These Superman Spin-Offs Could Be Perfect for DC
There are numerous possibilities for creating a Mr. Terrific spin-off series, and it might involve him utilizing both his intelligence and superhero abilities to overcome any villain he encounters. Since Mr. Terrific doesn’t have the most well-known collection of adversaries, the spin-off could borrow an antagonist from any part of the DC universe for Michael Holt to confront, either independently or as a member of a superhero team.
Currently part of the Justice League, Mr. Terrific is rumored to assemble another superhero team in the DC Universe – The Terrifics. So far, Superman has introduced two members of this potential team: Mr. Terrific and Metamorpho (played by Anthony Carrigan). Yet, Phantom Girl and a possible candidate for the DCU’s version of Deadpool, Plastic Man, are yet to join them.
It’s challenging to envision how a sitcom centered around cub reporter Jimmy Olsen might turn out, but it’s likely that it would involve other characters from the Daily Planet. Perhaps it could be a humorous series set in the Metropolis newspaper environment, with a recurring joke about Clark Kent’s mysterious and frequent absences for his superhero activities.
