James Gunn’s Reduced Role in Peacemaker Season 2: What It Means for Fans

In the upcoming second season of “Peacemaker” on HBO Max, creator James Gunn will be stepping back into a more limited role. While this may sound concerning to fans, they needn’t worry as Gunn initially introduced John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith (a.k.a Peacemaker), in “The Suicide Squad”. Following the success of the film, Gunn spearheaded a streaming spin-off for the character, set for release in 2022. The humorous anti-hero series received rave reviews and was swiftly renewed for another season. However, since then, there have been significant changes in both Gunn’s and DC’s situations.

Following the achievements on “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker”, James Gunn was appointed as co-CEO of DC Studios towards the end of 2022. This new position gives him oversight of a DC Universe reboot that’s already in progress, but it doesn’t mean he’ll be confined to an office. Instead, Gunn continues to write and direct films like “Peacemaker” Season 2, “Superman”, and “Creature Commandos”, all while managing his other duties within the DC universe.

Warner Bros. Discovery officially announced that James Gunn will be part of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2, though his role has changed from the initial 2022 debut on HBO Max. This news has raised some concerns among fans due to Gunn’s fame and successful history in the superhero genre. Some worry that a decrease in his involvement might lead to a drop in quality.

In a professional capacity, the originator of “Peacemaker” penned every single episode in its entirety and took charge of directing three episodes, among which is the debut one. Additionally, he plays an executive role along with DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran and the leading actor John Cena on this series.

Instead, Gunn oversaw the direction of five episodes for Season 1 of Peacemaker, and wrote every single one of them, equating to a decrease of two episodes he’ll be directing in Season 2 as he only pens the scripts.

Gunn’s reduced part in Season 2 of “Peacemaker” can be attributed to his other commitments at DC Studios. During the production period of “Peacemaker,” which ran from June to November 2024, he was also involved in the filming for “Superman,” which took place between February and July 2024, followed by post-production work. This scheduling conflict likely led to his smaller role in Season 2.

The director shared his juggling act with DC productions during the commencement of Peacemaker’s production, mentioning that he “could only work a few days over the weekend for Peacemaker” because other directors were scheduled to take over soon.

I’ve got just a handful of weekend days left before other directors jump on board with Peacemaker production, and time’s running short. While I’ll be helming some episodes – including this one – there are three exceptional directors lending their skills to our season as well.

In simpler terms, the press statement made it official that Gunn would direct the first episode, and a birthday post he shared on Instagram for Danielle Brooks in September hinted that he would also be responsible for episodes 6 and 8, including the finale.

There’s little doubt that Gunn will take charge of both the opening and closing episodes. However, we can only speculate that Episode 6 could be significant enough for the occupied DC Studios chief to direct it personally, or maybe it’s simply one of his preferred choices.

The teaser has revealed that the Justice League, featuring Superman, is set to appear in the series ‘Peacemaker’. Given James Gunn’s directorial history, their brief appearance could be a cameo in the debut episode, rather than revealing their fate in the summer blockbuster, as it might seem odd to spoil a late-series twist in the trailer.

For the next five episodes of Season 2, previously handled by Gunn, will be directed by Greg Mottola, Peter Sollett, and Althea Jones instead. These directors are joining the Peacemaker team for the first time, as the non-Gunn episodes in Season 1 were directed by Jody Hill, Rosemary Rodriguez, and Brad Anderson.

Why James Gunn’s Step Back on Peacemaker Is Nothing to Worry About

It can’t be argued that some might express concern over James Gunn reducing his role for Season 2 of “Peacemaker,” but there’s no need to fret. Despite this change, Gunn remains the boss of the DCU and has penned all the scripts himself. This ensures that his unique storytelling, humor, and understanding of these characters will continue to be a significant part of the show.

Here’s another way to phrase it: It’s worth mentioning that three episodes from Season 1, which weren’t directed by Gunn, are some of the highest-rated on IMDb. Even though those specific directors won’t be returning for Season 2, their replacements have impressive backgrounds in movies like Superbad, Your Honor, and Evil.

The initial three ventures undertaken by DCU – “Creature Commandos”, “Superman”, and “Peacemaker” Season 2 – have significantly reflected James Gunn’s creative impact across the entire universe to date. Not only did this seasoned superhero writer pen every single project, but he has also assumed the directorial responsibilities for each one of them.

In the upcoming year, enthusiasts can look forward to experiencing the DC Universe more intimately with Gunn taking a less hands-on approach for the productions of ‘Lanterns’, ‘Superman: Woman of Tomorrow’, ‘Clayface’, and potentially an animated follow-up series for ‘Blue Beetle’. However, he will continue to play an executive producer role and supervise these projects, with each being spearheaded by their respective teams.

This should provide a diverse array of content from the blue brand, showcasing various tones and styles, thereby demonstrating that the DCU (Disney Cinematic Universe) is not just the GunnVerse.
