James Gunn has recently ascended to one of the biggest roles in Hollywood by transitioning from directing key parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to overseeing the creative direction of the entire DC film universe. In this new position, he will be accountable for managing a multiverse of characters across multiple upcoming DC movies and TV shows. He acknowledges that he’s had some practice with this task due to his work on Rocket Raccoon.
During a chat on the DC Studios podcast, James Gunn discussed the challenging task of preserving a character’s tone across several projects, including different mediums like Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag who appears in both the animated series ‘Creature Commandos’ and the upcoming live-action ‘Superman’ film. Gunn emphasized that maintaining consistency in the tone among DC characters is crucial to him, similar to his experience with Marvel. He elaborated…
In my work, I’d often receive scripts featuring Rocket, a character I deeply identify with – one might say he’s my spiritual counterpart in these stories. Therefore, I always ensure his dialogue and actions resonate with logic and consistency. This dedication extends to all DC characters across movies and TV series. They must remain true to their essence, especially when they are characters I first brought to life on screen.
As the DC Universe (DCU) is just starting its initial phase, similar to Marvel, we can expect various characters to appear across numerous productions, each with unique storytelling perspectives. Although two screenwriters might not portray Superman identically, this diversity poses a risk as it could lead him to act in ways that seem uncharacteristic given the existing or planned narrative arcs for the character.
It appears that James Gunn has a knack for adjusting the tone for his works, as evidenced by an instance when one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies featuring Rocket, outside the Guardians of the Galaxy series, included dialogue or actions by Rocket that Gunn felt didn’t align with the character.

It’s common knowledge that Gunn has a deep affection for the character Rocket. Besides the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Rocket has appeared in just three other movies: Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder. It seems that in at least one of these films, Gunn felt there were issues with how Rocket was presented initially, so he stepped in to ensure Rocket’s actions were consistent and understandable. Now, on a larger scale, Gunn will be overseeing this process.
Given that Gunn takes great care over characters he created for film, it’s likely he’ll closely monitor how Superman is portrayed in other movies. At this point, we haven’t seen what kind of character Superman will be under James Gunn. But we’ll find out soon enough, as Superman is set to arrive in just a few weeks.
