James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Tracking for $135 Million U.S. Box Office Opening

In about three weeks, it’s projected that James Gunn’s Superman film, produced by DC Studios, will earn approximately $135 million in the U.S. box office when it premieres.

According to the prediction, if things go as planned, Superman will likely rank quite high among DC’s box office openings. However, it is expected to fall significantly short of the $166 million domestic debut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) when adjusted for inflation. Despite this, it should comfortably surpass the opening weekend earnings of the last standalone Superman film, Man of Steel (2013), which made $116 million.

Opinion, however, is sharply divided as to just how high Superman can fly.

The figure of $135 million, derived from top tracking service National Research Group, is backed up by sources privy to the data. Notably, NRG usually offers a range rather than a single value; in this instance, the projected domestic opening for Superman‘s film lies between $125 million and $145 million.

Predicting outcomes isn’t an exact art, and past projections have often been inaccurate across various platforms. Given this, insiders from DC Studios and Warners are adopting a cautious approach, estimating potential earnings to range between $90 million and $125 million. Figures below $100 million might be perceived as less than satisfactory.

At the other extreme, certain cinema analysts who focus on social trends predict that Superman could debut with a staggering $175 million, overtaking Batman v Superman as the largest DC opening yet. Currently, the second and third largest openings are held by Christopher Nolan’s last two Batman films: The Dark Knight Rises (2012) with $160.9 million and The Dark Knight (2008) with $158.4 million. If Superman opens to around $135 million, it would place just behind 2022’s The Batman ($134 million) and 2016’s Suicide Squad ($133.7 million), in terms of unadjusted earnings.

The eagerly awaited summer blockbuster marks a significant milestone for Gunn and Peter Safran, as it’s their inaugural self-produced project since they were assigned with revitalizing DC and attempting to match Marvel Studios’ success. This film, serving as the commencement of their DC Universe, premieres in North America on July 11, synchronized globally, leaving DC and Warner Bros. three weeks for their concluding promotional efforts.

In this modern retelling of the classic tale, David Corenswet plays Superman alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. This time around, Superman struggles with his extraordinary abilities while juggling his daily life as journalist Clark Kent on Earth, having been transported from his home planet Krypton. A new character in the mix is a canine companion named Krypto.

The ensemble additionally features Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio in the role of Eve Teschmacher, Edi Gathegi portraying Mister Terrific, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Anthony Carrigan playing Metamorpho, Isabela Merced bringing Hawkgirl to life, and María Gabriela de Faría taking on The Engineer.
