As a long-time fan of James Marsters‘ work, especially his iconic role as Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it’s heartening to see him open up about the darker aspects of his acting career. His honesty about the traumatic scene he had to film for “Seeing Red” showcases not only his professional growth but also his empathy and understanding of the impact such scenes can have on viewers.
James Marsters has shared insights about a distressing sequence he was required to shoot for the TV show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” describing it as the “most challenging and dismal day of my career.”
The actor known for portraying Spike in the popular supernatural TV show alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, recently featured on the Inside of You podcast, discussing a challenging incident he encountered during the filming of a contentious scene
“He stated that many fans of the series found it difficult, and he described it as the most challenging day in his career, saying ‘it was a very dark day for me professionally.'”
In the sixth season’s episode “Seeing Red,” originally aired in May 2002, we find Buffy, played by Gellar, resisting Spike’s romantic overtures. However, Spike, portrayed by Marsters, tries to force himself on Buffy as a way to make her acknowledge lingering feelings for him. Remarkably, Buffy manages to fend him off and push him into a wall instead
Marsters explained that for the show, the writers were tasked with revealing their most difficult and private moments – incidents they usually keep hidden, such as times when they caused significant pain or felt intense pain themselves, or major mistakes they made. To make these stories even more compelling, they were asked to add a metaphorical twist, like giving those dark secrets a set of proverbial fangs, before sharing them with the audience
However, the violent scene depicting an assault was inspired by a personal college experience shared by one of the show’s female writers. As Marsters explained, this writer had been dumped and went to her ex-boyfriend’s place, hoping that one last encounter would resolve their issues. Overwhelmed by emotions, she attempted to force herself upon him, but he had to forcibly eject her. This memory was particularly agonizing during that period of her life
The actor from “Runaways” explained, “[The writers] felt that as Buffy was a superhero, they could reverse the genders since Buffy could effortlessly fend off such situations. They believed that having a male character protect a female character would have the same impact, in my opinion.”
Instead, Marsters expressed a differing opinion regarding the writers’ concept and had concerns over how audiences might interpret Buffy’s perspective during the depicted assault
“He explained that he had said, ‘You understand, folks, we’re giving the viewers a shared experience,'” and went on to say, “‘In essence, everyone watching Buffy is Buffy, not superheroes. Therefore, I am addressing each viewer individually, and they will have their own unique reactions.'”
Filming the sixth season episode proved particularly challenging for Marsters as he has an aversion to scenes involving sexual predation, regardless of whether he’s performing in a production or viewing it on television. The act of portraying such behavior towards Sarah and enduring the harsh reality of it was emotionally taxing for him
The actor stated, “I don’t participate in or watch things related to that subject matter. If a film or TV show with such content comes on, I quickly change the channel or risk damaging the device. My response to this kind of material is quite strong and physical.”
In fact, he experienced a bodily response during the filming of the Buffy scene, mentioning that an old neck injury suddenly flared up and caused a loud noise similar to a gunshot while on set that particular day
According to Marsters, he suddenly fell to the ground. He realized he was quite stressed at the moment, and said something like, “I suppose I’m feeling a bit tense.” Afterward, we finished shooting the scene, and it was – it was incredibly difficult. He found himself in a state of personal distress
