As a long-time fan of James Patterson‘s Alex Cross series, I can’t help but feel a sense of vindication upon hearing the author’s recent comments about the 2012 adaptation starring Tyler Perry. While I was initially disappointed with that film, it seems that my gut feeling back then was spot on – Perry was indeed “screwed” by director Rob Cohen.
Since Amazon Prime subscribers can now stream the latest adaptation of James Patterson’s Alex Cross books, the bestselling author has been candid about his feelings towards the earlier movie version featuring Tyler Perry. In a recent interview, Patterson expressed that he believed director Rob Cohen had unfairly treated Perry on the set of Alex Cross.
In 2012, Tyler Perry paused his work on the ‘Madea’ films to star in a new adaptation of James Patterson’s novel ‘Cross’. This was an opportunity for him to introduce audiences to the renowned African American detective character, who had previously been portrayed by Morgan Freeman in two movies, ‘Kiss The Girls’ (1997) and ‘Along Came A Spider’ (2001). Now, Aldis Hodge is stepping into this role for the upcoming TV series set to air in 2024. Here’s what the author had to express about the casting choice.
In films, characters often don’t get enough development due to time constraints, like Sampson in some movies. However, here, Sampson is excellent, which is surprising given his limited screen time in previous adaptations. Interestingly, Jack Reacher has been portrayed by two talented actors, but Sherlock Holmes has had numerous interpretations. Remarkably, we’ve got three skilled actors playing Alex, including Morgan Freeman, Aldis Hodge, and Tyler Perry. Unfortunately, it seems Tyler Perry didn’t receive the director’s full support in his role.
In 2012, when Tyler Perry took on the role in the film “Alex Cross,” our review at TopMob awarded it just one star out of five. Eric Eisenberg commented that the movie was marred by an “absurd plot” and represented a “waste of talent.” The film fared poorly on Rotten Tomatoes as well, earning a score of 11%. Additionally, audiences seemed to agree, with the aggregator website recording a rating of only 47% from them.
The film, too, failed at the ticket sales, earning only $34 million globally compared to its production cost of $35 million. Originally, Summit Entertainment intended to produce a sequel named “Double Cross,” but due to its lackluster performance, those plans were scrapped. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, author James Patterson also mentioned this fact.
The director made significant changes to his work every night, rewriting the script from scratch. This left Tyler struggling to keep up with the new drafts, as each one was essentially a first draft. Despite having a minor role in “Gone Girl”, Tyler impressed everyone with his talent and was highly regarded.
Previously, the director of ‘Alex Cross’ had been responsible for creating the initial ‘Fast and Furious’ film, as well as ‘XXX’ and the third ‘The Mummy’ movie featuring Brendan Fraser. James Patterson was frank in expressing his opinions on how Cohen managed the second adaptation of his Cross series, but he did not lay blame on Tyler Perry for his acting skills. Instead, he went on to say:
In a fortunate turn of events, I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with three distinct individuals, each bringing their unique perspectives that I deeply appreciate. Aldis stands out as exceptional. Recently, I concluded reading Al Pacino’s autobiography, and I find a striking resemblance in Aldis’ approach to his roles. He dives deep into his characters, a trait that resonates with me strongly. From our very first conversation, Aldis exhibited an eagerness to delve into the character, promising a rich understanding of the role. You will notice scenes where he portrays multiple aspects of the character in a single scene, which I believe is truly remarkable.
As a game enthusiast, I can’t help but feel excited about the new adaptation of the Alex Cross books! It’s already storming through the charts, taking the top spot on Prime Video in the US and receiving rave reviews from critics. The streamer has even greenlit a second season! If you haven’t checked it out yet, all eight episodes of Cross are ready for streaming now. For more updates on upcoming book adaptations, head over to TopMob. Interestingly, two other books by the same author, Eruption and Run, Rose, Run, are also in development right now.
