As a connoisseur of art and a seasoned ski enthusiast who has trekked through the Alps to the slopes of Aspen, this announcement about Powder Mountain‘s ambitious public art program has me absolutely ecstatic! The idea of merging large-scale sculptures and land art with the pristine terrain of this 12,100-acre ski resort is nothing short of inspired.
Located in Eden, Utah, Powder Mountain – a 12,100-acre ski resort recently acquired by Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings – is embarking on an innovative public art project. This venture aims to scatter massive sculptures and land art pieces throughout the mountain’s expansive landscape, creating a harmonious fusion of art and nature.
The first round of installations includes renowned artists like James Turrell, who will place his Ganzfeld Apani light installation in a trailside pavilion, and Nancy Holt, whose significant 1980s work will be permanently installed in collaboration with the Holt/Smithson Foundation. Jenny Holzer will create text-based rock engravings, while Utah native Paul McCarthy plans an immersive piece inspired by the mythology of the American West. Other featured artists include EJ Hill, Arthur Jafa, Nikita Gale, Gala Porras-Kim, Davina Semo, and Raven Halfmoon.
Reed Hastings imagines Powder Mountain as a year-round destination that combines outdoor activities with art, promoting strong community bonds. The resort will offer activities like hiking and biking during summer and fall, along with skiing in winter months. Selected pieces of artwork will first appear during the 2024-2025 winter season, while the official launch of the art program is scheduled for 2026.
