As a dedicated fan who has witnessed the evolution of horror cinema over the past two decades, I can confidently say that the Saw franchise holds a special place in my heart. The jaw trap, as James Wan so fondly refers to it, is undeniably his baby and rightfully so. It’s the very same scene that captured my attention, and countless others’, back in 2004, sparking a fascination that has only grown stronger with each sequel.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the groundbreaking Saw franchise today! Legendary horror mastermind James Wan is taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane, sharing his all-time favorite trap from this iconic saga. He fondly refers to it as “my baby.” Wan directed the chilling debut film in 2004, which has since spawned an impressive nine sequels, with him serving as an executive producer for each one. A tentative 11th installment is planned for release in 2025, promising yet another dose of Tobin Bell’s chilling portrayal of Jigsaw, as he once again devises intricate traps to test the limits of his unsuspecting victims, all under the ticking clock.
As a die-hard fan, I recently sat down with the creator of the Saw franchise, and I must confess, I was taken aback when he revealed that the infamous jaw trap is his personal favorite among all the gruesome contraptions. Fans will remember this reverse bear trap first appearing in the original film, reemerging in Saw VI, and making a comeback in Saw 3D, where we witnessed its full destructive power after Jill was unable to break free from its grip. “Without a doubt,” he said, pointing out his favorite, “it’s the jaw trap.
That one has gained such a distinctive status. Naturally, it was featured on the poster, making it the one with the greatest significance or emotional impact for me.
The Jaw Trap Was Pivotal to Saw’s Success
The jaw trap, perched on Amanda Young (portrayed by Shawnee Smith) in the movie “Saw”, remains a chilling memory for many viewers even today. As audiences cringed in terror, they witnessed Amanda first use a scalpel to brutally murder a sedated Donnie, then carve him open to retrieve a key hidden within his intestines, desperately escaping the device mere moments before its vicious jaws closed. This memorable scene is said to have been instrumental in Wan securing funding for the movie by crafting a short film centered around it and presenting this compelling concept to potential investors.
We chose the jaw trap scene deliberately, as we believed it would draw viewers in. Indeed, when we released our short film, local producers reacted with surprise and intrigue: ‘What on earth is this?’ They were captivated, saying they didn’t fully understand what they were seeing but found it utterly fascinating. For me, that scene will forever hold a special place as my creation.
So far, Bell’s character Kramer, along with his associates, has set at least 73 traps across the Saw series, but none have quite matched the chilling design of the jaw trap. Although some were more distinctive than others, this particular one remains iconic and continues to be popular among fans who often use it for cosplay at horror conventions. However, given the devastation we’ve witnessed it can cause, it’s unlikely that we’ll see it again in future movies as Wan and his team continue to innovate and create fresh concepts to advance the ever-evolving world of Jigsaw.
