As a film enthusiast with a penchant for the unusual and a soft spot for games that push boundaries, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming adaptation of Pacific Drive. Having grown up exploring the hauntingly beautiful landscapes of the Pacific Northwest myself, this game’s surreal reimagining immediately struck a chord with me.

Television has shown its capability as a superb platform for video game transformations, especially since many games feature expansive narratives that require more space to unfold than what a two-hour or even three-hour movie can offer. The immense success of series such as “The Witcher,” “The Last of Us,” and “Fallout” has left Hollywood yearning for additional series to slot into their schedules. As a result, there are numerous game-to-TV adaptations under development, including “God of War,” “Mass Effect,” and “Devil May Cry,” among others.

In addition to existing series, another exciting series is on its way as James Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster, has acquired the rights to Pacific Drive – a highly praised game set for release in 2024. Developed by Cassandra Dracott and Ironwood Studios and launched in February this year, Pacific Drive was recognized at the 2024 Game Awards as one of the best debut indie games and earned a nomination for Best Game at the BIG Festival, ultimately taking home the prize for its exceptional gameplay.

The game received numerous positive reviews for its unique creativity and cleverness. Polygon’s Oli Welsh describes it as a challenging, innovative, and exceptionally thought-out creation, borrowing design elements and gaming mechanics from various genres to form a distinct identity that stands out as its own.

The official description of the game reads:

The theme of “Pacific Drive” seems perfectly suited for storytelling on TV. Each episode could be seen as a separate expedition into the harsh wilderness, with an overarching mystery that might either get solved or become more complex by the end of the season. Additionally, James Wan and Atomic Monster seem like an ideal team to produce “Pacific Drive”, considering Wan’s extensive background in horror and adventure genres. From “The Conjuring” to the “Aquaman” series, Wan has demonstrated a knack for handling such projects effectively.

The series will be executive produced by Wan, along with Michael Clear and Rob Hackett from Atomic Monster Productions, as well as Jeff Ludwig of The Menagerie Productions. Atomic Monster, known for their recent Peacock horror series “Teacup” produced by Ian McCulloch (“Yellowstone”), are also working on the upcoming thriller “Copenhagen,” starring and executive produced by Simu Liu. They’re also behind projects like “Obsession,” an adaptation of crime writer Catherine Ryan Howard’s novel “56 Days,” “1313,” a horror reboot of “The Munsters,” a “RoboCop” series, and a live-action adaptation of “Gargoyles.

As of now, there’s no confirmed air date for the series “Pacific Drive.” It hasn’t been picked up by any television network or streaming service yet.
