James Wan to Produce Half-Hour Comedy About Aliens in Area 51

As a huge fan of James Wan‘s horror masterpieces, I was taken aback when I heard that the acclaimed director was dipping his toes into comedy with a new sitcom about aliens for CBS. Don’t get me wrong, Wan has always had a unique ability to blend humor and horror seamlessly in his films, but this is an entirely different genre altogether.

Renowned horror filmmaker James Wan is venturing into comedy production for the first time by creating a new half-hour sitcom about extraterrestrials for CBS. Known for his terrifying works like “Saw,” “Insidious,” “The Conjuring,” and “Malignant,” Wan has taken a break from directing since “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” in 2023. However, he hasn’t been idle, as he has been busy producing various projects such as Stephen King adaptations “Salem’s Lot” and “The Monkey,” as well as the follow-up to the 2021 video game adaptation, “Mortal Kombat.”

According to Deadline, Wan will create the new sitcom named “Area 51” under his Atomic Monster production label. This banner has previously contributed to shows like “MacGyver,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and “Archive 81.” The sitcom’s development is being spearheaded by the creators of “God Friended Me,” Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt, along with Laura Moran, who previously worked on another successful CBS series, “The Neighborhood.”

As a curious gamer with an interest in UFO lore, I’ve heard countless tales about Area 51, the enigmatic government base nestled in the Nevada desert. This clandestine site is rumored to be the secret repository for the debris of alien spacecraft and extraterrestrial beings, most famously from the Roswell incident of 1947 when a UFO reportedly crashed on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. Since then, Area 51 has been the epicenter of wild conspiracy theories, with some claiming that it’s involved in all sorts of extraordinary projects – from manipulating the weather to developing time travel technology.

Area 51 will aim to poke fun at those conspiracy theories with a single-camera workplace sitcom shot similar to The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Not much is known about the series thus far, other than that it will follow “the humans and Aliens that work together at the country’s most mysterious place.” There’s no word on casting, or when the series might make its network premiere.

James Wan Has a Ton of New Projects in the Pipeline

Besides the mentioned projects like Stephen King’s adaptation and Mortal Kombat sequel, the 45-year-old Australian filmmaker, Wan, has a total of 20 other films in progress. He is involved as producer or writer for these projects which consist of M3GAN’s sequel and spin-off, the final Conjuring series film, Last Rites, Insidious spin-off named Thread, and a New York remake of Train to Busan, titled The Last Train to New York. However, the latter is currently uncertain due to the cancellation of its planned 2023 release date.

As a longtime fan of classic sitcoms, I’m thrilled to hear that “The Munsters” is getting a modern revival. Having grown up watching reruns of this beloved series from the 1960s, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement at the prospect of seeing Herman, Lily, Grandpa, Eddie, and Marilyn in a new light. But what really piques my interest is the announcement that this reimagining will be “darker.”

Recent news about the production of “Area 51” follows the announcement made last month that the SyFy series “Resident Alien,” starring Alan Tudyk, was renewed for a fourth season and is shifting to USA Network. Although Wan’s new sitcom shares no resemblance with “Resident Alien,” its achievement in securing another season likely contributed to the go-ahead for “Area 51.” Further updates on casting and developments for “Area 51” will be shared as they emerge.
