Jamie xx Drops Club-Ready Sophomore LP ‘In Waves’

As a seasoned gamer who’s been spinning tracks since the days of my old turntables and mixers, I can honestly say that Jamie xx‘s “In Waves” is a pulsating symphony that takes me back to the heart of the club scene. The album is a testament to the resurgence of dance music in the post-pandemic era, and it’s clear that Jamie has been waiting all night for this moment.

Following a lengthy release spanning the summer season, Jamie xx’s album “In Waves” has finally been released in its complete, exuberant form. This second full-length LP from the UK-based producer and DJ is a 12-track expedition through heartfelt house and euro-trance bliss, featuring a wide range of collaborators to bolster its sound.

In a world post-pandemic, there’s been a surge of music tailored for nightclubs, and it seems this trend continues with Jamie’s latest project. The album begins with “Wanna,” a captivating introduction featuring filtered keys and 808 beats that seem to rise from the depths, placing listeners on the club’s threshold. Jamie then elevates the experience with a collection of tracks marked by heavy kicks and rich basslines, such as “Treat Each Other Right” and “Baddy On The Floor” featuring Honey Dijon. These tracks also incorporate vocal samples scattered throughout the album. For longtime fans, there’s “Waited All Night,” which sees The xx singers Romy and Oliver Sim reunite for a heartfelt progressive house ballad.

In the album “In Waves”, songs like those with pop singer Robyn, “All You Children” by the Avalanches, and the closing track “Falling Together” featuring Oona Doherty incorporate spoken-word affirmations that create a sense of a dancefloor prayer. The profound spiritual ambiance infused in the music invites listeners to immerse themselves in the euphoric experience of raving.

With a third of The xx, Jamie refined his initial electronic style alongside his bandmates on albums like “xx” and “Coexist.” Following their 2017 album “I See You,” each member has been focusing on individual projects. Romy put out her solo album “Midair” in 2023, while Oliver Sim released “Hideous Bastard” in 2022. Jamie was the first to embark on a solo career around a decade back, debuting with his first LP “In Colour” in 2015.
