Tuesday night’s vice presidential debate between Tim Walz and J.D. Vance provided a stark reminder of just how dangerous this mindset can be.
During Tuesday evening’s vice presidential debate in New York, Democratic nominee Tim Walz criticized J.D. Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate on the Republican ticket, when Vance described Trump’s persistent claims that the 2020 election was fraudulent as normal political discourse. Furthermore, Vance drew a parallel between his unwillingness to acknowledge the election results and Hillary Clinton’s allegations concerning Russia purchasing ads to support Trump’s campaign.
Walz countered Vance’s comparison between Trump’s 2020 election claims and Clinton’s 2016 statements, along with Putin’s ads for Trump, by stating that January 6th was not a matter of Facebook ads. He emphasized that the Capitol attack was an unprecedented threat to our democracy, one that emerged due to Donald Trump’s persistent refusal to acknowledge his election loss.
Beyond disputing the outcome and conceding the election to President Joe Biden following the 2020 vote, Donald Trump has additionally faced indictment by a federal grand jury over four charges concerning his attempts to alter the results of the 2020 presidential election. The accusations encompass conspiracy to deceive the United States, obstruction of justice, obstructing the rights of citizens, and tampering with witnesses. The untruths Trump has propagated about the 2020 election have reportedly led to over $500 million in legal expenses, security costs, and repairs to the Capitol, as per a Washington Post report from 2021.
During the lively and policy-focused debate among the candidates, who generally behaved respectfully and even found common ground at times, Vance was asked if he would attempt to overturn this year’s election results. Instead of answering directly, he spoke to CBS moderators about his preference for discussing the future. He also hinted at the Biden administration and potential censorship, possibly referring to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s comments expressing regret for permitting the Biden administration to persuade him to delete posts related to COVID-19 during the pandemic.
Vance stated that there indeed seems to be a danger to our democracy within the nation, however, this isn’t the issue that Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are focusing on. Instead, he highlighted the threat of censorship as a significant concern. This involves Americans ending long-standing friendships due to political disagreements, powerful tech companies suppressing free speech, and Kamala Harris suggesting silencing people instead of debating and convincing them to avoid spreading misinformation.
In response, Walz spoke about the fatalities resulting from the riot involving Trump’s supporters at the Capitol and how this incident has led to increased threats of violence within his state.
Walz emphasized that we can’t simply ignore the escalating situation, comparing it to a frog in boiling water. He made it clear that the election had been lost and the individual in question refused to accept this fact. On the day of the Capitol incident, 140 police officers were brutally attacked, some even waving American flags. Tragically, several of these officers later passed away, and similar incidents occurred elsewhere. In Minnesota, a group convened on the State Capitol grounds in Saint Paul [Minnesota] and announced their intention to march towards the governor’s residence, warning that there could be casualties.
Later on, Walz mentioned that it was Trump’s efforts to subvert the outcome of the 2020 election and Vice President Mike Pence’s subsequent actions that led to Vance being opposite him on Tuesday evening.
Governor Walz explained why Mike Pence isn’t present today, stating that he chose to confirm the election results. His concern lies in understanding where the boundary is with Donald Trump; if he believes he can interfere with an election and Vice President Pence won’t oppose it, that’s what America needs to consider: will you uphold your oath of office, even if the President does not?
