Janelle James Looks Back on Not Getting Role on Netflix’s ‘GLOW’ After She “Nailed” Audition

Janelle James is looking back on a role that got away.

During an interview on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast, the actress from “Abbott Elementary” was asked if she ever watches projects she auditioned for but didn’t land. She shared about a specific role she deeply desired.

James mentioned, ‘It’s been some time since I last considered this. There was another opportunity I eagerly pursued, and that was for GLOW – the female wrestling series, right? Can you recall it? Truly, I aspired to land that part.

She went on to explain, “The task was for a female wrestler, requiring us to create an ’80s rap and perform it during the audition, along with a fight scene involving ourselves. I composed a rap, followed by executing a round kick. As I walked away from that audition, I thought to myself, ‘I nailed it.’ Unfortunately, I didn’t secure that role.

Thus far James said she hasn’t “watched one second of that show.”

She expressed a touch of frustration, saying, “I’m feeling quite bitter,” followed by suggesting she might catch it later that day post-interview.

In 2020, Netflix decided against renewing GLOW for a fourth season, explaining that challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible to proceed with the production of the final episodes.

At the point when GLOW was in full swing with season four, it had already finished one episode and begun a second. However, the global spread of the coronavirus necessitated production halts for not just GLOW, but also various other series and films.

During its three-season span, the show garnered 18 Emmy nominations and secured three victories. The series, developed by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, presented a fictional account of the genuine women’s professional wrestling league known as Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, which debuted in the 1980s.
