As a huge fan of Janelle Monáe and her groundbreaking work both in music and activism, I am absolutely thrilled to witness her latest collaboration with Fem The Future and Made In Her Image. This partnership is a game-changer for the next generation of filmmakers, especially young women, girls of color, and genderqueer individuals in the film, media, and technology industries.
Janelle Monáe’s charity, Fem The Future, is collaborating with Made In Her Image to nurture the upcoming generation of filmmakers.
The organizations aim to support and specifically target young women, girls of color, and genderqueer individuals in film, media, and tech industries. In March, Fem The Future and Made In Her Image welcomed 25 students aged 13-17 for their inaugural Open Lens Film Lab, providing them with specialized courses, workshops, and mentorship in filmmaking from the viewpoints of women and genderqueer individuals of color. In August, these budding filmmakers will present their short films at the Open Lens Showcase, showcasing themes such as gender identity and self-confidence.
In the future of our sector, organizations like Made In Her Image play a vital role in driving progress. The students and their productions demonstrate remarkable innovation and unwavering determination, fostered by the Open Lens Lab. This mindset has been instrumental to Fem The Future since its beginnings.
At Fem The Future, we advocate for a feminine-focused future by bridging the gap between STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and creative arts for women, girls, and gender diverse individuals of color. Established in 2018, Made In Her Image has reached over 158,000 people through digital learning, mentored 5,610 mentees, assisted 1,920 community members, and initiated 35 programs while collaborating with industry leaders such as A24, Sundance, Disney, and Panavision.
“With Fem The Future’s assistance, Made In Her Image can not only boost the projects of budding filmmakers but also maintain our long-term objectives. We’re building a space to inspire, empower, and guide future artists and cinematographers, enabling them to showcase their unique viewpoints and improve their craft.” – Malakai, director of “The Chi” and founder of Made In Her Image, expressed in a statement.
According to Sade Ndya, cinematographer and organizer of Made In Her Image: “I owe my identity to the community we’ve built at Made In Her Image. This organization has supported me in my professional development and given me the opportunity to pass on knowledge to future generations.”
