As a long-time fan who has grown up with the magical world of Harry Potter, I must say I am both excited and apprehensive about the upcoming series. The casting choices are impressive, particularly the rumored addition of Olivia McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall. With her extensive experience in various roles from Ozark to Maleficent, she certainly has the acting chops to bring McGonagall to life.

The ensemble of the upcoming Harry Potter series, being jointly produced by Warner Bros. and HBO, continues to expand. Most recently, Paapa Essiedu from Gangs of London has been rumored to take on the role of Severus Snape, originally played by the late Alan Rickman. Now, it’s being suggested that an Academy Award-nominated actress is in discussions for a significant part – potentially as Professor Minerva McGonagall, who plays a pivotal role throughout all seven novels written by J.K. Rowling.

McTeer is primarily recognized for her portrayal of Helen Pierce in the Netflix series “Ozark”, led by Jason Bateman. Additionally, she plays Jessica Jones’s mother in “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” and has roles in films like “The Menu”, “Maleficent”, and “The Woman in Black”. She is also scheduled to appear in the upcoming final installment of the “Mission: Impossible” series in 2025. Throughout her career, McTeer has earned two Academy Award nominations; one for Best Actress in “Tumbleweeds”, another for Best Supporting Actress in “Albert Nobbs”.

In eight film adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s novels, Dame Maggie Smith, who tragically passed away this year, played McGonagall. However, Fiona Glascott portrayed the character in the “Fantastic Beasts” prequel movies. Given the popularity of the character, McTeer has a challenging task ahead.

The person responsible for managing the new series is Francesca Gardiner, a writer who has previously worked on “His Dark Materials” and served as a producer on both “Succession” and “Killing Eve”. Additionally, director Mark Mylod, known for his work on “Succession”, will also be part of this project. The series is scheduled to debut in 2027 and is expected to span approximately 10 years until its completion.

J.K. Rowling plays a significant role in the creation of this TV show, serving as an executive producer. However, some readers are taken aback due to the author’s vocal and critical stance on transgender rights. Organizations such as GLAAD, who advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, have distanced themselves from her controversial opinions, stating that her language can potentially harm members of the transgender community.

Despite several key figures in the Harry Potter world, such as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Eddie Redmayne, publicly distancing themselves from J.K. Rowling, Warner Bros. and HBO have not yet severed their ties with the author. Casey Bloys, head of the network, maintains that Rowling’s influence hasn’t impacted casting, hiring writers, or production staff. On the other hand, an HBO representative emphasizes that Rowling’s contributions have been “extremely beneficial” and she is entitled to express her personal opinions.

Apart from them, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, and Jim Broadbent have joined J.K. Rowling’s defense, with Bonham Carter reiterating that the author should be free to express her opinions. However, this debate goes beyond just freedom of speech: Rowling advocates for the elimination of an entire group of people, which is the contentious point that her critics are persistently challenging.
