Jared Leto Asked His Tron Cast Mates to Call Him Ares During Shooting

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of film industry knowledge tucked under my belt, I must say that Jared Leto never ceases to surprise me with his acting methods. His dedication to immersing himself into a character is nothing short of remarkable, albeit sometimes a tad peculiar for the uninitiated.

It seems that Jared Leto has taken an unconventional approach for his role in the upcoming “Tron: Ares.” As per Jeff Bridges, he requested his fellow actors to refer to him by his character’s name during filming. This movie marks Bridges’ return to the franchise and introduces a fresh cast that includes Greta Lee, Sarah Desjardins, Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, along with Leto. Leto is renowned for his “method” acting techniques, which are said to help him immerse himself in character. In David Ayer’s less favorably received DC film, Leto reportedly sent unusual gifts like dead animals and used condoms to his co-stars as parting presents.

In a chat on SiriusXM’s Literally! With Rob Lowe, Jeff Bridges talked about collaborating with Jared Leto (or more famously known as Ares) in the upcoming Tron sequel. The seasoned actor reminisced about his initial days on set and his early interactions with Leto during the filming of Ares.

I sensed an intriguing atmosphere about the topic. I inquired, ‘How’s Jared? How’s he managing work-wise?’ To which they replied, ‘He’s doing okay. By the way, we often refer to him as Ares, so he goes by that name.’ I found that tidbit quite fascinating.

Jeff Bridges initially encountered Jared Leto during the set of ‘Tron: Ares’. The actor showed great respect for Leto’s unique acting style, honoring his method. Contrary to what his ‘Suicide Squad’ co-stars might share, Jeff Bridges only had positive experiences with Jared Leto throughout the film’s production, expressing nothing but kindness towards him.

In the series, his character was named Ares, and I blurted out, “Hey there, Windy buddy! Can I call you Windy?” To which he agreed, and from then on, our conversation flowed effortlessly, leading to a fantastic time together. We even played music, as you know.

Unlike the first two “Tron” films where humans entered the video game world, the upcoming movie “Tron: Ares” takes a different approach. In this story, instead of people entering the digital realm, an advanced computer program named Ares breaks free from the game and makes contact with human beings for the first time as an AI. Additionally, Ares is not only an artificial intelligence but also a well-known “rockstar”, as portrayed by Jeff Bridges. Jared Leto drew upon his real-life experience as the lead singer of Thirty Seconds to Mars when playing his role in “Tron”.

Regarding the clandestine “Tron” project, Bridges was cautious about sharing details. Yet, he hinted at the possibility of incorporating musical aspects within the film (even though it’s unlikely there will be a dance routine on light cycles, which sounds quite intriguing). To quote him directly:

[Leto is] quite an accomplished musician, which we delve into during the series, and it’s truly fascinating. He gives a remarkable performance in his role, and I feel privileged to be involved in this production.

Tron: Ares
is scheduled to release on October 10, 2025.
