Actress Jasmine Mooney is probably best known for her appearance in
, but the Canadian actress has made small appearances in many other projects over the years, including iZombie and Loudermilk. However, while attempting to renew her work visa, the actress and entrepreneur was subjected to what she calls an “inhumane experiment” on the U.S.- Mexican border which saw her being detained by ICE officials.
The actress detailed being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers when crossing the border at San Diego. En route to visiting her lawyer to arrange the renewal of her permit, the actress instead found herself being held in a cell for over two days. She told KGTV 10:
“I was put in a cell, and I had to sleep on a mat with no blanket, no pillow, with an aluminum foil wrapped over my body like a dead body for two and a half days. I have never in my life seen anything so inhumane.”
While she was reportedly not told exactly why she was detained for so long, the ordeal was enough to make her thankful to have made it out the other side. She added:
“They told me I was unprofessional because I didn’t have a proper letterhead on my paperwork. I still don’t even know how I’m home. My friends and my family and the media are the reason, I think, that I’m home.”
Jasmine Mooney Is Not the Only Person to Be Detained Unnecessarily
Mooney, who, as well as being an actress, is the co-founder of the wellness brand Holy! Water, was first reported to have been detained on March 13, and the awareness raised about her plight through the media has raised several other concerns about the way border detentions are becoming more frequent for those who have the right documentation.
Lawyer Jim Hacking recommends to those not holding U.S. citizenship to refrain from traveling abroad, as there’s a risk they might not be able to re-enter the country. In a statement to Newsweek, he stated:
“In the 17 years I’ve been practicing immigration law, I’ve never heard of a TN visa holder being detained for days on end and not being allowed to enter. I have lots of clients from Canada. I do believe that many Canadians have taken it way too casually with their immigration status over the years.”
Obviously, the subject of immigration has been a hot topic since the return of Donald Trump to the power seat in the White House, which has led to controversies and arguments about what is and isn’t right. Selena Gomez was caught in a social media frenzy when she posted an emotional video earlier this year, which led to calls for a boycott of her series Only Murders in the Building, and the already controversial Oscar-nominated movie Emilia Pérez.
