Jason Blum Gives Update on Dead by Daylight Movie at NYCC

As a long-time horror enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the terrifying world of Dead by Daylight, I can confidently say that the news about the upcoming movie adaptation has me on the edge of my seat with anticipation. Having played this game since its release in 2016, I have witnessed firsthand the evolution and growth of its iconic characters, from the original killers to the collaborations with other popular horror franchises.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast with a soft spot for horror genres, I must admit that the surge of video game adaptations is like a sweet dream come true, particularly for devotees of series such as Uncharted and Five Nights At Freddy’s. However, there’s one video game that has been keeping horror aficionados on the edge of their seats in anticipation – Behavior Interactive’s Dead By Daylight. This game serves as a veritable paradise for both movie and horror game enthusiasts, offering an opportunity to assume the roles of iconic slashers or survivors in a chilling cinematic experience.

In the 2016-released game, a quartet of survivors struggle to survive against a relentless killer controlled by another player. Last year, Jason Blum’s company, Blumhouse, together with James Wan’s Atomic Monster, announced their partnership to create a movie based on Dead By Daylight. Now, fans are excited as they receive updates about the progress of this film production.

At New York Comic Con, Jason Blum shared with ComicBook that the script for the “Dead by Daylight” movie adaptation is currently being developed. He emphasized that they are actively seeking a screenwriter and director who share a passion and dedication towards the game to ensure the film does justice to the well-known franchise. In a prior conversation with ComicBook, Wan demonstrated his admiration for the game and their affinity for all things horror, which gives fans confidence that the “Dead by Daylight” movie is in capable hands.

Blum drew an analogy between the development of the eagerly anticipated remake and that of another horror movie based on a video game by Blumhouse Productions, “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” which has been one of their highest-grossing films so far. In conversation with ComicBook, the producer stated that while the “FNAF” film managed to delight fans, but not critics, it took a decade to bring it to life. So, fans of “Dead By Daylight” may have to be patient, but they can take comfort in knowing that the remake will be crafted with care.

Multiplayer Video Game Adaptations Have Proven Tricky to Produce

Many popular video game adaptations, such as “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” often revolve around a sole or titled hero who battles against non-player characters (NPCs) either alone or with allies. However, the response to the “Minecraft” movie trailer suggests that creating an adaptation of a game lacking a clear protagonist can present challenges.

However, it is not unheard of. Adaptations like Mortal Kombat are based on games where players take on the personas of different fighters to spar against each other, but video game fans have rarely had a true multiplayer game adaptation that takes into account the personalization of play styles in a multiplayer setting.

Given that the game Dead By Daylight features numerous characters from well-known series such as Chucky (from Child’s Play) and Michael Myers (from Halloween), it could be challenging to create a movie accurately representing the game. The game initially debuted with an original roster of now legendary killers and survivors, leaving ample horror figures for adaptation outside of the collaborative characters. Although it would be thrilling to witness Ghost Face and the Demogorgon from Stranger Things unite in the movie version, many fans are equally eager to see the game’s chilling original characters like the Trapper, the Twins, and the Huntress.
