has often shared candid views on various subjects, and the latest to be given the rough side of his tongue came thanks to his recent appearance in Season 3 of
, in which he appeared fully naked on-screen. With the series in full swing – no pun intended – Isaacs nude scene has obviously drawn a lot of attention, and in a new interview with CBS Mornings, the actor called out the double standards of male and female nudity on screen.
The Harry Potter veteran is remembered by many for playing the villainous Lucius Malfoy, a character always seen overdressed in layers of black robes and miles away from his au naturel appearance in the highly acclaimed The White Lotus. Doing press for the series in the wake of his bold moment has been a conveyor belt of questions about whether everything on display in his nude scenes was his own, or a prosthetic. Although it has already been confirmed that Isaacs did wear a prosthetic penis during the scene, he is sick of still having to talk about it, and during his interview crudely addressed how, if he was a woman, he would not be having the same discussion.
Many individuals are engaged in a lively discussion about it. The topic is widely spread across the internet, and the intrigue lies in the fact that Mikey Madison, this year’s best actress at the Oscars, is receiving little to no attention regarding her on-screen nudity. It’s fascinating to note the double standard, as if a man were in the same situation, discussions about his body parts would be rampant. However, when women like Margaret Qualley, who also bared all in ‘The Substance,’ are exposed, people seem hesitant to discuss their bodies, focusing instead on their acting skills. This double standard is quite peculiar and warrants further thought.
“[I’m dodging the question] because I don’t think that people really want to know how the sausage is made. Genuinely, I think it would be odd when there are characters — and some of the women are naked in here — it’d be odd if you were sitting here. And you would never dream of discussing their genitalia, not for a second. Mike White is a brilliant writer; it’s the best series on television for a long time. And what is the obsession with penises? It’s an odd thing.”
Attitudes Towards Nudity are Incredibly Fickle
What is and is not deemed acceptable when it comes to sex scenes and nudity in movies and on TV is in a constant state of flux. In recent years, Games of Thrones, 365 Days, and Bridgerton are among many projects that have used nudity to the fullest extent, which seems curious when so many people seem to be against its inclusion, general discussions about the subject are blocked and blurred on social media sites, and controversies about on-set intimacy coordinators are constantly making headlines.
Isaacs makes his point clear, noting that there are double standards as to how males and females are treated when it comes to any kind of sexual content. For years, some performers have complained about being objectified for their looks or body, only to then appear scantily clad in a music video rolling around on a car hood in shows of “freedom” and “expression.” Others have called out the need for gratuitous scenes in movies, and then have appeared in such scenes themselves without any complaint when the paycheck is right, the director is iconic, or the script is outstanding. Sometimes the world is confusing, but never more than when it comes to the workings of Hollywood, and the media obsessions that come as part and parcel of the world of movie making.
