Jason Isaacs has provided further explanation about his belief that there’s an unequal treatment of male and female actors regarding on-screen nudity.
The full-frontal scene featuring Timothy Ratliff’s character in season three of Mike White’s “The White Lotus” has sparked lots of discussions about nudity in films and television. It was disclosed earlier that Isaacs utilized a fake body part for the scene, but the actor is now fed up with discussing the matter further.
During an interview on CBS Mornings last week, the Harry Potter actor was questioned about whether he used a prosthetic, but he tried to avoid answering directly. When he was called out for not providing a clear response, Isaacs countered by saying, “Here’s why: because the most talented actress this year at the Oscars was Mikey Madison. And yet, no one is discussing her private areas, which were constantly visible on screen. So, it seems there’s a double standard for men. But when women are nude, like Margaret Qualley in The Substance, people wouldn’t dare to discuss their genitals or other sensitive areas with them. It’s strange that there is such a double standard.
For an individual trying to steer the discussion away from private matters regarding himself, his comments instead ignited a lively debate online.
Currently, Isaacs is retracting his remarks from his appearance on CBS Mornings: “The internet found amusement in speculating about whether I was wearing a prosthetic during my nude scene, and I joined in the fun. However, I didn’t want this to be the only topic of discussion regarding Mike’s fantastic series, as it often happens with other actors. So, I decided to deflect the question with humor if it came up. But, when so many people were persistent about it, it felt strange and inappropriate that they seemed more interested in knowing whether they had actually seen my real penis or not. It’s quite bizarre.
Essentially, what I intended to express but didn’t quite manage, is that women have consistently faced exploitation, exposure, and inappropriate treatment, both on-screen and off, for a long time. What I found particularly striking was the specific questioning about female genitalia, something I had never seen before. I regret using the term ‘double standard,’ as it may not have been the best choice of words – there has indeed been a double standard regarding nudity in films, and men haven’t been the ones affected by it. Interestingly, shows like ‘White Lotus’ are trying to address this issue!
Isaac playfully added, “Regardless of your thoughts, here’s my advice: simply savor the performance – remember, nothing in it is genuine, and there are even more astounding surprises yet to come!
The White Lotus airs new episodes on Sundays.
