As a die-hard Eagles fan who has followed Jason Kelce‘s incredible journey from the gridiron to the broadcast booth, I can’t help but cheer for this latest move! The man’s got charisma, wit, and a knack for football analysis that makes him stand out in a sea of sports pundits.
Live from Philadelphia, it’s … Jason Kelce?!
As a hardcore gamer (and football fan), I’m pumped to share that the legendary Philadelphia Eagles alum and Monday Night Countdown analyst, who happens to be none other than Zach Ertz, is getting his own late-night show! This exciting venture kicks off in January and will be filmed right here in Philly. The man himself made the announcement on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last Thursday. Can’t wait to tune in!
Jason Kelce’s Late Night Show” will broadcast on ESPN at 1 a.m., during the overnight hours between Friday and Saturday, starting from January 3/4. Additionally, it will be streamed on ESPN+ and on both the ESPN and Jason Kelce YouTube channels, greatly increasing its availability. ESPN has secured five episodes of the program, with the final episode scheduled for February 1.
The production titled “Late Night” is set to be filmed at Union Transfer in Philadelphia, featuring a live audience. Its style is characterized as being focused on personality, drawing strong influences from traditional late-night talk shows. The show will primarily highlight this weekend’s NFL games and welcome celebrity figures from the football world and beyond as guests.
NFL Films will produce the show alongside Kelce’s Wooderboy Productions and Skydance Sports.
Although the show won’t be broadcasted live (it will be recorded a few hours before it’s aired), it will still maintain the essence of traditional late-night programs. Features such as Philly’s own SNACKTIME band and interactive segments aimed at engaging with the live audience of football enthusiasts will remain integral parts of the show.
The title, “They Call it Late Night,” is a nod back to “They Call it Pro Football,” which was the first full-length film produced by NFL Films in 1967. NFL Films can be traced back to Philadelphia and still maintains its base in the region, just across the border in New Jersey.
The midnight program represents an intriguing shift for ESPN, not only for them but also for the late-night show format as a whole. As traditional television late-night shows shrink due to reduced relevance in the current media landscape and a decline in linear TV viewership, this format struggles to adapt effectively. However, it demonstrates promise on social media platforms, though financial returns are yet to fully catch up.
Although Kelce’s program may seem conventional, featuring a live band and esteemed visitors, it breaks away from the typical late-night setting in New York and LA. Consequently, numerous guests will have to travel explicitly for their appearance on the show.
For ESPN, striving to lead as the top sports streaming platform, it’s worth giving this a go, considering Kelce’s vibrant personality and expanding fanbase. A late-night sports-focused format could be a distinctive attraction for its upcoming premier streaming service, even if the show is initially an experiment, offering just a few episodes at present.
The program might reach a broader audience since it’s being streamed on YouTube too, not just late-night viewers at 1 a.m. Additionally, it will be rebroadcast on ESPN2. Although we don’t know how they decided on the timeslot, it’s worth mentioning that this timing won’t put the show in competition with Kimmel on ABC.
Netflix is venturing into the late-night scene too, acquiring a weekly variety chat show from John Mulaney for release next year.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but admire Travis Kelce, who’s famed for his vibrant character. After hanging up his NFL jersey this year, he became the most sought-after media personality. Eventually, he found his new home at ESPN, where he now takes a seat behind the desk, gracing their Monday Night Football studio show with his charisma.
Additionally, he shares hosting duties on the podcast named “New Heights” together with his brother, Travis Kelce. This popular show has just signed a substantial contract, worth nine figures, with Amazon’s Wondery. In Hollywood, both brothers are sought after, as Travis is also hosting “Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?” on Prime Video.
