As a seasoned cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the silver screen world, I must admit that the recent allegations against Jason Momoa, aka Aquaman, are disheartening to hear. The video of Valkyrae’s account of his behavior on the set of Minecraft is concerning, especially considering my personal experiences of working in the film industry where professionalism and respect for crew members are paramount.
Recently, Rachell Marie Hofstetter, better recognized by her YouTube name ‘Valkyrae’, has publicly criticized the Aquaman star for allegedly displaying poor behavior during filming of one of their collaborative movies. A video posted online describes him as the “most problematic celebrity” in her streaming career after her appearance in the movie.
In a video posted on X/Twitter, Valkyrae participated in a version of the Hot Ones concept, where she discussed various topics while consuming food with spicy sauces. When asked about her most difficult work experience, due to her minor role in the upcoming movie, Momoa’s behavior towards crew members became synonymous with rudeness and mistreatment, as recalled by Valkyrae following a specific scene. She reminisced:
What’s the best way to put this? Well, I have a brief appearance in an upcoming Minecraft film. Now, let me tell you about an incident involving Jason Momoa that I found rather disheartening. It happened after a particularly intense and emotional scene, so perhaps he was still in character. However, he seemed to treat some of the crew members less than professionally, which left me quite surprised.
She continued:
He was clearly upset because they weren’t doing something correctly, it was like he was setting up a shot and such. He was extremely angry, almost furious, and yelling. This wasn’t a pleasant working atmosphere at all, one that I wouldn’t enjoy being part of. So, to answer your question, I would definitely say that was likely the most unprofessional celebrity encounter I’ve had.
It’s challenging to assess the truthfulness of the statement that Jason Momoa didn’t cause any issues on the set of Minecraft, as there may be underlying circumstances we’re unaware of. However, it’s worth noting that Momoa has been involved in controversies before, with his most recent one being allegations of intoxication during filming for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Minecraft Could Be Heading for Disaster
Despite no reported initial misconduct, the Minecraft film has encountered a potential hurdle, as reactions to the first trailer have been less than favorable. To put it into perspective, the debut of this trailer on YouTube received an astonishing 1.5 million dislikes, which is significantly more than double the 660K likes it amassed. With the movie not hitting theaters until April 2025, there’s still a chance for the film to persuade viewers that it offers something captivating in cinemas rather than being just another film worth waiting for on a streaming platform.
Many critics of the trailer might want to keep in mind that the primary viewers for this film, based on the video game franchise, are likely to be younger fans. Parents who accompany their children to watch the movie could significantly influence its success, potentially making it a new blockbuster like “Super Mario” or “Borderlands”.
Minecraft
