Jason Momoa Claims His New Show ‘Chief of War’ Is Bigger Than Game of Thrones—Forget Dragons!

Jason Momoa enthusiastically previews his upcoming television series titled “Chief of War“, sharing why it’s being hailed as a grander spectacle than “Game of Thrones“. Known for his breakout role as Khal Drogo in HBO’s adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s seminal work, Momoa is back on the small screen with an impressive new drama centering around the significant kingdoms of the Hawaiian islands. The nine-episode “Chief of War” will debut on August 1 on Apple TV+, with Momoa not only starring as the main character but also executive producing and co-creating the series alongside Thomas Pa’a Sibbett.

Reflecting on my discussion with GQ about the upcoming miniseries “Chief of War,” I drew a comparison between my time as Khal Drogo and this new venture. As the leading man in the Minecraft Movie, I’m eager to delve into the scale and cultural impact of this project. Interestingly, someone I collaborated with on Game of Thrones noted that “Chief of War” could potentially be larger than Game of Thrones ever could be. Here’s the quote:

“Someone I worked with on the HBO show observed that Chief of War was ‘bigger than Game of Thrones could ever be.’

It turns out that a person I collaborated with on “Game of Thrones” holds significant influence, and they lent their expertise to our current project, becoming deeply engrossed in it. They were astounded by certain aspects of our work, asking questions like, “Did you know this?” and “Did you know that?” To which I responded, “Yeah, we’re aware.” However, he emphasized that what we’re working on surpasses the scale of “Game of Thrones,” stating, “Forget dragons, man—this is mind-blowing!” These are authentic tales, and there’s a wealth of stories at our disposal.

That’s what makes it special – this is an exciting moment for us. When we manage to pave the way, not only for our team but for everyone who appreciates the struggle and effort that goes into achieving something like this. Unfortunately, we can’t reveal everything, but we’ve certainly broken through that barrier, and now it’s open for the new generation to seize the opportunity and hopefully find their inspiration within it. That’s truly what we hope will excite our team members.

What Momoa’s Comments Mean For Chief Of War

It’ll Be An Epic Saga

Originating from the Fifth Season and Chernin Entertainment studios, known for producing “Severance” on Apple TV+, comes “Chief of War”, a series slated to recount an extraordinary account of the unification and colonization of Hawaii at the turn of the 18th century. As per official announcements from Apple TV+, this is Jason Momoa’s second collaboration with the streaming service, following the three-season sci-fi thriller “See”. The upcoming drama serves as a deeply personal project for Momoa, an idea he had been considering for roughly ten years. Unlike his globally acclaimed series “Game of Thrones”, Momoa’s latest production carries a unique, personal narrative behind it.

In a recent interview with GQ, co-creator Sibbett explained that both Momoa and himself needed to enhance their respective roles as an actor and writer. After working together on several projects, they are now joining forces again for the production of “Chief of War”. The film boasts a predominantly Polynesian cast, with notable actors like Luciane Buchanan from The Night Agent, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, newcomer Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, and Te Kohe Tuhaka.
