Jason Momoa UN-DEAD in Dune 3?

As a die-hard fan myself, I’m thrilled to share that I, Jason Momoa, have confirmed my return as Duncan Idaho for “Dune: Part Three,” also known as “Dune Messiah.” Despite the heroic sacrifice my character made in Denis Villeneuve’s first film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic 1965 sci-fi novel, I’m set to rejoin the franchise for its third and final installment. During a recent chat on TODAY with Craig Melvin, I spilled the beans about my comeback for the series’ upcoming chapter—and if the story sticks close to the source material, you can expect Duncan Idaho to play a significant role in the sequel.

I’m unsure if I might face repercussions or not, but let me put it this way: just like the series ‘Game of Thrones’, you understand what I’m hinting at, correct? If you haven’t read the books, that’s not my responsibility, right? Well, I will definitely be returning.

Besides Momoa, it’s anticipated that Dune Part 3 will reprise its main characters and their respective actors. This includes Timothée Chalamet portraying Paul Atreides, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Charlotte Rampling as Gaius Helen Mohiam, and Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan. There are also several others who played smaller roles in the Dune Messiah novel expected to appear. Since the story is set 12 years into the future, some roles might be recast or more plausibly, the current cast may be made to look older to depict the time leap.

Although Herbert’s “Dune” series, spanning six books from 1965 to 1985, has fueled much cinematic interest, filmmaker Villeneuve plans to produce no more Dune movies beyond the upcoming third installment due in 2026. Adapting the first book for the screen required some alterations, leaving uncertainty about how closely the third film will mirror its literary origin. Nevertheless, it is expected to maintain the overall narrative, delving into Paul Atreides’ – now known as “Maud’Dib” – experiences 12 years into his Imperial reign, having dominated much of the galaxy.

How Duncan Idaho Can Return in ‘Dune 3’

In 2021’s “Dune”, Jason Momoa portrayed the skilled swordsman Duncan Idaho. Towards the film’s end, he tragically perishes while aiding Paul and his mother, Jessica, in their escape amidst a fierce assault by the Imperial Sardaukar troops. Despite not appearing in 2024’s “Dune: Part Two”, Duncan Idaho’s tale does not reach its conclusion. Instead, he plays a crucial role in “Dune Messiah”, where it is disclosed that his body was found on Arrakis by the Sarduarkar and handed over to the enigmatic group called the Bene Tleilax. He is then revived as a “ghola” (in essence, a clone).

In a new twist, the narrative of “Dune Messiah” veers from the grandeur of science fiction towards a deeper exploration of political intrigue. Director Denis Villeneuve has suggested that the Dune films will not form a traditional trilogy; instead, he views the first two movies as an adaptation of the initial book. If a third film is made, it won’t follow the typical trilogy pattern. Rather, it would offer something fresh and distinct.
