Jason Segel Discusses Typcasting and Shrinking Season 2

As a seasoned film critic with a penchant for comedies and a soft spot for underdog stories, I must say that I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming Season 2 of “Shrinking” on Apple TV+. Having had my fair share of being typecasted in roles (a certain loveable yet awkward character from a popular sitcom comes to mind), I can truly appreciate the efforts made by Jason Segel and Bill Lawrence to give Brett Goldstein a chance to break free from his “Ted Lasso” stereotype.

Jason Segel, well-known comedian from popular shows like “How I Met Your Mother” and “Freaks & Geeks”, recently discussed adjustments made when Brett Goldstein joined the cast for Season 2 of “Shrinking”.

The Apple TV+ comedy “Shrinking,” featuring Jason Segel alongside Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Lukita Maxwell, Michael Urie, and Christa Miller, is preparing for its second season debut on October 16th. Bill Lawrence, along with Segel and Goldstein, will continue as the show’s producers, but Goldstein has taken on additional duties in Season 2. Apart from his roles as producer and writer, the actor will also appear in the upcoming season of the series.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter regarding the revival of Shrinking, Lawrence discussed Goldstein joining the cast and how they aimed to distance him from his character in Ted Lasso. In the show, Goldstein portrays Roy Kent, a grumpy coach who is known for his prolific use of profanity, as if it were essential for his survival. According to Lawrence’s statements:

I occasionally commit an error, one that many viewers might make too. It’s when you compare someone to the character they portray. In my mind, I thought this individual was more like Roy Kent, but then I realized, ‘Wait a minute! He’s actually very empathetic and sweet, nothing like Roy Kent.’ Then I corrected myself, ‘What was I saying? He’s genuinely kind and wonderful in real life.’

In a lively manner, Jason Segel urged, “Hey, what’s the plan here? Let’s consider having Brett take on this role instead.” Without giving away any secrets, let me tell you that the show thrives on audience support for this character, and I believe he delivers exceptionally well.

Segel additionally provided Goldstein the chance to break free from the Ted Lasso stereotype. This was similar to his own experience when confronting the link between him and his character, Marshall Eriksen, on How I Met Your Mother.

“I knew, secretly, that he wanted to play that part and I knew he would kill it. I have a lot of experience being Marshall Eriksen and then working to have people see me as other characters; I know he probably deals with that as Roy Kent, so I just wanted to be the voice to say no, do something totally different, let’s break that now. And he’s amazing in the show.”

The first season of “Shrinking” received widespread praise, often being referred to as Apple’s most significant comedy contribution since “Ted Lasso” concluded its third season in 2023. This season garnered a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91% and was recognized at prestigious award ceremonies such as the Golden Globes and Primetime Emmys, earning nominations in acting categories.

In the series, Jimmy Laird is a grieving therapist who struggles to keep his personal grief related to his wife’s death separate from his professional life. His ethical boundaries blur when he begins to intertwine himself with his patients’ lives. Despite the overwhelmingly positive response to Shrinking, some viewers criticized Jimmy’s unorthodox approach to therapy. When speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Lawrence acknowledged this concern.

As a movie reviewer, I’d put it this way: “In the heart of filmmaking, the therapeutic community has shown nothing but kindness towards us. This is because, despite its fictional nature, they recognize the deeper purpose behind every therapist character – to serve and aid in the healing process. I believe these characters resonate with their roles, tapping into the essence of empathy and compassion.

You can currently watch the debut season of “Shrinking” on Apple TV+. The second season will be released on October 16th.
