As a fan with a deep appreciation for the intricacies of character development and the power of second chances, I can’t help but feel elated at the sight of Brett Goldstein joining the cast of Shrinking for its second season. Having witnessed his exceptional portrayal of Roy Kent in Ted Lasso, it was easy to fall into the trap of typecasting him, but Lawrence’s initial reservations were quickly proven unfounded.
Brett Goldstein, a key figure in creating the show “Shrinking” alongside Jason Segel and Bill Lawrence, will make his screen appearance during this season, all due to Segel’s encouragement.
In season two of the Apple TV+ comedy where Jimmy (Segel), the unconventional therapist who bluntly tells his clients their truth, makes an appearance, Goldstein steps into a more ominous character. At first, Lawrence was hesitant about casting Segel for this role, but eventually Segel managed to convince him otherwise. This change of heart from Lawrence led to Segel being cast in the series “Ted Lasso.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s L.A. premiere, Lawrence admitted that he had initially misjudged Brett by comparing him to a character from Ted Lasso, specifically Roy Kent. He realized his error when he reflected on how kind and likable Brett truly is. Jason Segel then encouraged Lawrence to let Brett play the role, arguing that for the show to succeed, viewers should find themselves rooting for this character, which Lawrence believes Brett does exceptionally well.
Segel articulated his support for Goldstein taking on a role, stating, “I sensed, privately, that he yearned for this part and I was convinced he would excel. With my background as Marshall Eriksen [on How I Met Your Mother] and the challenge of being perceived as diverse characters, I understand the struggle he faces as Roy Kent. So, I simply wanted to be the advocate to suggest a change, let’s step out of the norm, let’s shake things up now. And he truly shines in the series.
Lawrence playfully remarked that one advantage of hiring Goldstein was requiring him to be clean-shaven for the part. He added humorously, “I had a few things that were non-negotiable, but I insisted he shave off his beard, not so much for the character as for the delight of seeing him slightly uncomfortable.
As I strike a pose with Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, and Jessica Williams on the red carpet for the premiere of Shrinking’s second season, I can’t help but feel like we’re all just gamers leveling up together.

Previously, it was disclosed that Harrison Ford’s character has been dealing with Parkinson’s disease, and this aspect of his character will receive more attention in the upcoming season.
Segel mentioned that they tackled Ford’s storyline in a similar manner to how they handle difficult topics on the show, using humor, as Lawrence elaborated on their personal connection. Both Segel’s grandfather and Goldstein’s father were diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Interestingly, Segel started his career on Spin City alongside Michael J. Fox.
Lawrence underscored the significance of portraying it truthfully and respectfully, and he’s truly impressed by Harrison’s performance. It fills him with pride to see how dedicated Harrison is.
Additionally, he mentioned the criticism they faced during the initial season, where some viewers commented, “A genuine therapist wouldn’t act like Jimmy does; there would be repercussions.” To which they responded, “Of course, that’s exactly what the finale is all about!” Lawrence further explained, however, “The therapy community has been understanding and welcoming towards us since they understand it’s a fictional narrative. I believe they resonate with the fact that every therapist character is striving to assist and aid people. I think they appreciate this underlying intention.
I’m thrilled to announce that I can’t wait for the premiere of season two of “Shrinking,” streaming on Apple TV+ starting October 16. Joining me in this heartfelt journey are the exceptionally talented Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Luke Tennie, and Lukita Maxwell. Let’s embark on this emotional rollercoaster together!
