Jason Stathams Box Office Behemoth 'The Meg' Finds New Streaming Home

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for action movies and a soft spot for Jason Statham, I must say that “The Meg” was a delightful surprise. Having watched countless films featuring The Stath taking down all sorts of bad guys, from terrorists to assassins to Vin Diesel, it was intriguing to see him tackle a threat as massive as a 75-foot shark.

As an ardent movie enthusiast, I’ve always admired action movie titan, The Stath, taking on countless villains throughout his career – terrorists, assassins, gangsters, and even The Rock and Vin Diesel! But what if this indomitable martial artist were to face a threat from a kaiju? That intriguing question was finally addressed in the 2018 science fiction action blockbuster The Meg, ready to create a wave on its new streaming platform starting tomorrow.

As a cinephile, I’m excited to share my thoughts on “The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub and scripted by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber, loosely inspired by Steve Alten’s 1997 novel. This action-packed adventure features a stellar ensemble cast including Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, and Cliff Curtis. The story unfolds as they face the potential danger of becoming shark bait when a 75-foot-long megalodon, a fearsome predator from the Mariana Trench, breaks free and starts causing chaos. “The Meg” will be swimming into theaters starting from November 22, so get ready to dive into the official synopsis below!

Originally believed to be long extinct, a gigantic beast suddenly assaults a deep-sea exploration vessel in the Pacific Ocean, crippling it and trapping its crew at the ocean floor. As time ticks away, an innovative marine scientist enlists experienced diver Jonas Taylor to rescue the team and protect the sea from an unprecedented danger – a colossal prehistoric shark measuring 75 feet in length, known as the Megalodon.

Despite Mixed Reviews, ‘The Meg’ Was a Box Office Behemoth

Instead of flaunting his assassin abilities or his role as a former special agent, or even that of a beekeeper, The Meg presents Jason Statham in a heroic yet unexpectedly skeptical role as a rescue diver. Despite receiving seriously mixed reviews upon its release, with 47% from critics and 44% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie was a box office titan, earning $530 million worldwide. However, let’s ignore the reviews and send them to the bottom of the ocean, as Statham enthusiasts will undoubtedly enjoy watching their action hero do everything in his power to protect us from the threat of the colossal shark.

Due to its massive earnings at the cinema, a follow-up movie titled “Meg 2: The Trench” hit theaters in 2023. This B-movie monster sequel received mainly unfavorable reviews from critics (with a rating of 27%) but was well-received by audiences, scoring an impressive 73% on the Popcornmeter. Just like its predecessor, “Meg 2” continued to bring in money at the box office, accumulating a total of $397.7 million globally and leaving viewers eager for news about a potential third installment.

With six “Meg” books available, we have a long time to enjoy watching The Stath battle enormous creatures. Information about the possible production of “The Meg 3” is scarce, but director Ben Wheatley of “Meg 2: The Trench” expressed interest in returning for another installment. Last year, he mentioned to Total Film that he hopes to be involved again.

I won’t discuss it until Meg 2 has been released, but I eagerly anticipate a potential third installment. There’s so much unexplored depth within that world, it’s vast and captivating. Its global aspects are particularly intriguing.
