This financial burden, coupled with his family responsibilities as a husband and father, makes Terry an easy target for his former lover, Martine Love, who persuades him to gather a group of thieves to pull off a daring heist – the robbery of the safety deposit boxes at the Baker Street branch of Lloyds Bank in London.
Unaware to Terry and his group, Martine – portrayed by Saffron Burrows – had been arrested for trying to bring drugs into England. Now, she’s being coerced by the British security service M15 to carry out a bank heist as part of a scheme to obtain a particular safe deposit box rumored to contain damaging photos of Princess Margaret, the younger sibling of Queen Elizabeth II.
In the beginning, the movie The Bank Job sticks to traditional heist movie tropes as Terry and his crew survey the bank and burrow into the vault without being caught by the police. However, the film truly gets thrilling once Terry and his team crack open the vault and raid the safety deposit boxes, finding out that the money and jewels inside are less valuable than the photos they unearth.

One of Britain’s Biggest Heists Inspired The Bank Job
The film “The Bank Job” draws inspiration from one of the boldest bank robberies ever recorded in British history – the Baker Street heist. This daring theft occurred at the Lloyds Bank branch on Baker Street, London, during the early hours of September 11, 1971. A group of thieves dug a tunnel into the bank’s vault and made off with millions in cash, jewels, incriminating documents, and photographs linking some high-profile British figures to scandalous activities.
In 2023, a History Channel documentary series called History’s Greatest Heists reenacted a heist that was orchestrated in the movie by a female character named Martine Love. However, it’s important to note that in reality, the Baker Street heist was organized by a career criminal named Anthony Gavin back in 1970. He drew inspiration for the robbery from the Sherlock Holmes story “The Red-Headed League,” where thieves tunnel into a bank vault from a connected shop, similar to what occurred during the actual heist as depicted in the movie.
In the movie, Jason Statham’s character Terry Leather is essentially a blend of Gavin and his right-hand man, Reg Tucker, both being car dealers. However, it’s important to note that unlike Terry, Reg didn’t have a criminal background when it came to the heist. Gavin assigned Reg the job of surveying the bank before the tunneling operation, using a thermal lance. As depicted in the film, their radio chatter during the robbery was picked up by a radio hobbyist who tipped off the police.
Concerning the supposed items found in the 268 safety deposit boxes during the actual heist, the truth is unclear. Although there have been ongoing rumors, no definitive proof has ever emerged that compromising photographs of Princess Margaret, along with other notable individuals, were discovered during the robbery, as suggested in the film. A significant contrast to the movie’s plot is that Gavin and Tucker did not receive leniency from authorities; instead, they each received a 12-year prison sentence.
