Javed Akhtar and Kangana Ranaut’s settlement was not mutual, reveals Shabana Azmi; here’s what the lyricist had demanded

Approximately a month has passed since the defamation case between lyricist Javed Akhtar and actress Kangana Ranaut was resolved in a Mumbai court. Now, Shabana Azmi has come forward with fresh details regarding the matter. Earlier this year, in February, Kangana and Javed concluded their four-year long legal battle. However, it appears that the resolution was not entirely amicable, as per recent reports, Akhtar had sought a written apology rather than monetary compensation.

As per an article by Bollywood Hungama, Shabana Azmi stated that Javed Akhtar is asking for a written apology from Kangana Ranaut instead of financial reparations. She noted that both Javed Akhtar and his attorney, Jay Bhardwaj, can claim the victory in this matter.

Actress from The Dabba Cartel clarified her perplexity regarding how the media presented the resolution as an amicable agreement, failing to emphasize that Javed’s main objective all along was to secure a written apology, which was the driving force behind his pursuit of this case for four and a half years.

In July 2020, Javed Akhtar lodged a complaint against Kangana Ranaut, claiming she harmed his reputation by bringing up his name during discussions about the death of Sushant Singh Rajput in a TV interview, which he felt was defamatory. Subsequently, Kangana countered with her own complaint, accusing Javed of intimidating her and making offensive remarks, alleging these actions violated her dignity.

In the mediation document presented to the court, Kangana conceded that her comments during the July 19, 2020 interview and subsequent statements were due to a misinterpretation. She unequivocally retracted all those remarks and promised not to make them again in the future.

In addition to her role in The Emergency, she also offered an apology to Javed Akhtar for any trouble he may have experienced, recognizing his prominent position within the film industry and holding him in great esteem.

Originally, the actress dropped her accusation against the well-known poet. In his mediation statement, Javed Akhtar mentioned that he consented to withdraw the accusation based on Kangana’s remarks.

After our recent legal matter was settled amicably, I proudly posted a snapshot capturing my joyous moment with Javed, sporting smiles all around. In the caption, I playfully hinted that he’s now on board to compose melodies for my upcoming cinematic project.
