As a lifelong admirer of the legendary Javed Akhtar, I have always been captivated by his insightful words and profound contributions to Hindi cinema. His recent comments on starry tantrums and rising entourage costs were both enlightening and amusing. It’s fascinating to hear about how things have changed over the years, with stars requiring multiple vanity vans and a staff of 18-19 people.
Javed Akhtar, a well-known screenwriter and lyricist in Hindi films, gained prominence through his work on Amitabh Bachchan’s 1973 movie Zanjeer, where he teamed up with veteran screenwriter Salim Khan. The duo, known as Salim-Javed, worked together on numerous movies such as Sholay, Deewar, and more. In a recent statement, Akhtar commented on the increasing demands of stars and their entourages by pointing out that hairstylists charge around 75,000 rupees per day. Jokingly, he expressed his desire to learn hairstyling skills himself.
In his recent episode on Chill Sesh, comedian Sapan Verma’s comedy show, Javed Akhtar discussed his encounters with diva-like behaviors by movie stars on film sets. Akhtar reminisced about past times and mentioned that nowadays, he often hears tales of stars demanding three luxury trailers on set.
The seasoned screenwriter further explained that they maintain one gym habit for workouts, while two vehicles serve dual purposes – one for meal preparation and the other for dining. Meanwhile, the lyricist noted that modern celebrities typically employ around 18 to 19 staff members.
I’d give anything to learn hair styling from that guy who keeps their tresses in tip-top shape for a cool Rs 75,000 a day! Can you imagine the fortune they’re raking in if I’d only known about it earlier?” Akhtar jokingly remarked.
The writer of Sholay, as he reminisced, shared that he hadn’t encountered such situations during that period. Akhtar remembered the stars as being unpredictable and undisciplined, often arriving late at the shooting location. Unfortunately, they didn’t have enough resources to take advantage of such luxuries.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share my thoughts about an intriguing revelation from the same show. Legendary Javed Akhtar opened up about his children, the talented duo Zoya Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar, expressing their views that his writing style feels a bit “dated” to them. Remarkably, they even shared that they often find themselves dreaming in English!
Javed Akhtar is currently wed to the esteemed actress Shabana Azmi. Recently, he appeared in a mini-series documentary titled “Angry Young Men,” which also featured Salim Khan. This series delved into the lives of the renowned screenwriting duo. Directed by Namrata Rao, it made its debut on Amazon Prime Video.
